Utah!

Oh Desert, that is such a bummer!! I am so sorry they failed. I think that four hour failure is probably the cause. So sad. Once my chicks are laying and I have purebred eggs again, I'll replace them for you.

Kyle, your chicks' parents are awfully pretty. It'll be fun to see how they turn out when they grow up.

I have to say, raising chicks with a broody mama is the way to go!! It is sooooo nice to not have to worry about them. My little hen is doing such a good job with them.

ANNNNNND, I was noticing that some of my goth girls' combs are starting to turn red!!

They are 5 months old this week, so they are getting up there, and getting about ready to lay. I can't wait to see what color eggs I get. Obviously, the two FBCM will get the dark brown. But, I'm curious about the three legbar/fbcms. I'm *assuming* they'll be olive eggs. And, of course there's the EE I bought from Sundance. Squee!

Last year i got about an 8LB walleye out of the Jordan. I like to fish the rivers around here too. Never been to Sevier. Sorry last fishing post ha ha

All but the black one came from my hen, I bought her from a guy up in Alpine named Jason. She was still fertile for about 2 weeks after i got her so I saved her eggs.

Edit: After researching a little, I guess it wasn't a purebred like i was thinking, it's an easter egger. I am keeping the ones from my hen to raise for myself. I have some others that I got from someone up here that should be hatching in a couple days (the black one is one of them) and they're purebred, i saw a few of their hens.

Here's my hen:

And here's the rooster she was bred with:

Hi everyone!!

Had a really bad day
sad.png
.
First, I found the legbar eggs had all 'passed' several days ago
hit.gif
.

Then, while working on chicken runs I decided to put one mare, who tries to kill herself when tied up, in with my stud, since she had started in estrus and hadn't been with him yet. They were getting along surprisingly well
wink.png
, when he kicked out and caught his foot in a heavy steel bull panel
ep.gif
, then freaked and wedged it even further, forcing a piece of reebar up between the back of his pastern pad and along the length of the entire foot, gouging his foot open
hit.gif
. As DH and I were frantically trying to hold him still, as by now he had raised his leg, pulling the supporting T-post from the ground and unhooking the tremendously heavy steel bull panels, blood was gushing from the cut
sad.png

.

I yelled for DH to get a hacksaw to cut him loose but neither of us was thinking clearly, and couldn't think where it was... I saw the neighbor was home and told DH to go get him to torch through the steel. They both came running over with a hacksaw and went to work. While cutting the steel away, DH sliced through his finger, to the bone.

Now two bloody injuries
th.gif
!!! The neighbor went running to get his wife as he knew we both were going to need moral support, if not physical help, if the horse went down and brought the heavy steel down on any of us. Meanwhile DH had to run to the house to wrap the cut, as he couldn't see through the blood to cut more steel, leaving me holding the horse
ep.gif
.

They all returned in what seemed to be a thousand years
old.gif
....while they were gone all I could do is calm Chico and watch the blood flow heavily from the foot
hit.gif
. They finished cutting the steel and Chico withdrew his foot. He tried to put weight on it but held it back up quickly. Then, and only then did we all think to call a vet. Of course, like everything else around here... they are few and far away... I put a pressure compound pack on Chico's foot, we loaded him up and off we went to the vet. When we arrived, the bleeding had stopped
hmm.png
, luckily.

GOOD NEWS : the vet inspected him, shaved and cleaned the area, cut away the shredded flesh and stated he hadn't cut any tendons, ligaments or major arteries, nor were any bones broken however all the nerves and soft tissue had been crushed and ripped, and would need a long time to heal
sad.png
. He will now need the dressings changed every other day for the next few months, until healed. The vet claimed that since it's in a horrible place, that it will break open while healing for weeks on end, and that he should be kept quiet and calm.... no pacing, no running, no more mare breeding this year. BAD NEWS: breeding just started!!
he.gif

DH wouldn't go to the clinic (or hospital), of course!!
rant.gif
. I just wrapped the cut with a pressure wrap to keep the flesh together until it starts healing. He has strict instructions from Dr Me.... not to get it wet!!! He won't listen
somad.gif
.

Ugh!! So hoping the power outages have stopped... just wish the high winds would quit too... so worried about the eggs in the inc!!!

Desert, I'm so very sorry to hear about your stallion, but at least you didn't loose him. There is always next year. But that does royally suck.

I got my chicks from Casa, and I can't get over how awesome the NN is. I've never seen one, and its hilarious, my daughter thought it was an Ostrich, that she called her Grandma screaming that I bought an Ostrich. hahaha, I was laughing so hard. Now I just have to try to talk my sister into the fact that she really doesn't need to take it home. She is probably going to take the one EE pullet, and of course leave me the roo looking one, which in turn if he really is a boy, I will have the never ending hunt for a home for him. Oh well. Hopefully they are all good tonight. Put them in the pen with the four 6 week old chicks, and they all did just fine. Hopefully they are all still friends in the morning. If not they have huge area to duke it out. J/K, hopefully not. But then again, they might be going on a very long 12 hour car ride tomorrow.

So I only have 3 of the daycare rescues left, she's taking the rest. So I think there is 2 Australorp looking ones, and then one cleaned leg Maran looking one, they are about 3 weeks old, and have been doing great outside during the day. I still bring them inside at night. Any takers?

Madchicken, that is so cool! Where did you get those eggs?

Desert, I'm so sorry about your rotten, no good day. I'm glad your stallion will be all right. Is it possible to, erm, milk him and then artificially inseminate your mares? I know that they can do that with cows/bulls. so..... Tell your dh that he can either follow YOUR instructions, or you take him to the doctor. I think he probably ought to go to the doctor because there could be nerve damage. I cut my thumb badly two summers ago, and it still doesn't act quite right- doesn't bend exactly right, and there's still some numbness. I wish I'd gone to the doctor.

Thanks Silly for your sympathies. The big problem is some of these mares are really old and this was already the second year trying to get them in foal. They are barely cycling as it is. But yes, at least he'll be okay (his reining show days are over, of course). Just have to watch for infection now. The vet gave me enough antibiotics that will last a long time. If he does get infection, it will go to the tendons and then real touble occurs. So as long as no infection.... perfect prognosis.

Yea Sphinx... bad, bad, rotten day!! I spoke to the vet about 'extracting' seman but he's just a young stallion, and hasn't quite figured out the whole procedure yet. The vet is convinced it would ruin him. Especially since during breeding, he's such a gentleman already, he plays with their tails and 'talks' to them forever, like he's asking permission and making sure it's okay. Drives me nuts!!! He takes forever. Just not an experienced, confident stud yet. This is only his second year breeding and last year didn't sire anything.... too busy swirling their tails around his nose...grrr!! And he's terrified they'll kick him. Like I said, just not confident yet; and this certainly won't help since he was flirting when he hurt himself.

DH is stubborn!!!!! He's way too big for me to make him do anything!!! Hoping it doesn't get infection!! Tonight, before I wrapped it, I asked him to pour peroxide deep into it, press it together and then to air dry it really well. I mentioned if he was going to dry it by hand, to pull some tissue paper from deeper in the roll where it's unhandled, to pat dry. He came out of the bathroom holding the tissue bunched up, rubbing the side of his leg where he had an itch.... REALLY???????? Anyway, after he made another attempt at cleaning it, I wrapped it with paper surgical tape then a polyester tape over it. Ugh!!! When it gets infection, then maybe we'll go to the hospital and they can rip it open, freshen the cut and stitch. Men....
