Utah!

Been busy busy with apricot jam making - our five trees are a job in themselves when the fruit's ready! In amongst all this, we rescued an abandoned young cat, who ended up being pregnant and had her 5 kittens on Monday (they're cute and adoptable!!), and Poppy, one of our Australorps, has become stubbornly broody! Motherhood seems to be in fashion. Anywho, reading that a good way to unbroody a hen is to give her a chick and let her be mama, and since we'd been thinking of adding a couple more chickens, we decided to give it a shot. Only problem is that neither of our Cal Ranch stores have chicks now. Anyone have any ideas? I'm in southern Utah, but could travel if need be either to deliver a kitten of get a chick

I have some silkie eggs you can give her. Im sure if you make a trip this way you will end up with a dozen really good eggs for that broody! Everyone has something different.

Candled my broody's eggs today. I'm unsure of what to look for but I think we have 3 of the 5 fertile. I thought I saw a blood ring on one of the infertile/dead ones but again, not entirely sure what to look for. I'm thinking of waiting a couple of days and rechecking them. Anyways, here is a couple of pictures I wanted to share.

Hello everyone
frow.gif

Last couple days had a crazy hatch!! I accidentally shut off the air conditioner while changing cords, and my inc got too hot, so only had a 60% hatch

. Hatched out Barred Hollands, Wels, a single Lav Am, a single Lav Orp, only two Cream Legbars hatched (one was infertile, one hatched out then immediately died

, and one never pipped but was fully formed. Of the two Legbars one was a cockerel
hmm.png
. Had a couple Salmon Favs hatch that are adorable. Of my 40% lost, almost all were formed but didn't make it out (I'm sure the heat got them

Have another 40+ eggs set to hatch on the 27th that I'm super worried about

. Hoping my Choc Orps, SQ Buff Orps and SQ Black Orps have a better hatch. Still learning this inc.

Have 2 day old Barred Hollands and Welsummer for sale.

Hi Sara... the first looks good to me but can't really tell from the pic, on the second. How long have these been under your broody??

Hi Desert, today was day 8. I wouldn't be heart broken if they didnt end up hatching to be honest with ya. I'm thinking I've got a close to full coop. The first pic was the first egg I looked at and I was all excited thinking they were going to all he that way but they others all looked different :-/ I guess I'll just wait and see what happens.

Day 8, you would see a lot of movement. You would be able to tell pretty easily. They say 10 is the ideal time for movement though. So, try again then. :)

Desert, how many welsummers do you have? Maybe I'll have her adopt some of them if they don't change.
Well...lol... I have three for sure that are a week and a half old, of which one is tiny.

Of the ones that just hatched I had a couple SQ hatch the exact same time. I had been checking every two hours so as to pull the SQ as they came out. Unfortunately, last night, I had my DH's grandson help me move chicks. He mixed the SQ Welsummers with the production Welsummers

. If I can tell the difference, I should have about 5 of the 2 day olds for sell. If I can't, I'll be forced to keep until they grow out, to find the SQ birds.

Maybe you're more interested in the Welsummers hatch in two days. That way we can plan on how to get them to you when they're new hatched... think there's about 5 eggs in the inc (I can check this morning if you're interested in those; have a really good hatch rate with my own eggs).

I also have about 4 or 5 Barred Holland 2 day old chicks available. They aren't as big as Barred Rocks, have bright yellow legs and lay a white egg. They tend to be flighty however.

Also- hatch coming up in the inc are Black Australorps for next week.

Sara, I can special hatch for you from any of the breeds I have, which I'm not keeping chicks from. Just let me know what you're interested in and what we can do for that broody of yours.

I think my Sicilian Buttercup Queen Bee is really going to be a King Bee. Almost 7 weeks old, and starting to change colors.

Anyone interested in a Buttercup Roo? I do still have my neighbors 3 for sale, I might have to keep one of hers now. The younger ones are 4 weeks old, and she was told they are sexed Pullets, so I guess if your interested in Breeding them, I have 3 Pullets to the Roo if anyone is interested. But I can't say 100% that the other ones are girls, just from what I was told.
