Utah!

I don't think it works that way? Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that fairs use the standards too. I know my Sebright I showed a few years back was disqualified because she was too big.

My Sizzle rooster is excellent, but they aren't recognized.
My Silkies are missing feathers and their wings and tails have normal feathering.
None of my Brahmas are good enough for show. My Buffs all decend from Ideal Poultry lines... And they're a third the size they're supposed to be! My Light is better, but I still think she falls short... She's huge but I don't think she's more than 5 pounds. And her feathers are still growing back. She's missing a toe.
I'm familiar with the standard or perfection for Buff Brahmas. My hen would fit well, if she were bigger, wasn't missing a toe, and if she had yellow feet. But she's nice and wide and has good feathering. Her Columbian pattern isn't perfect but not too bad either.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but that about round up my current flock!
Our local show only DQs sick/hirt birds, like ones with mites or a pecked eye. The one missing a toe wouldn't be a good choice but your silkies might, even with their tails there's no reason for them to DQ one. See if one has two sets of five toes, a full crest and beard and poses a little naturally? Maybe your brahmas are :bantams?

Just for fun...he he..got a kick out of this little piggy.
:)

This is a very big newby asking some dumb questions....What kind of an incubator to buy? Probably a dozen eggs or so for chicken sized eggs. Let's see it should have an automatic turner, right?

.

That is so cute!

Not a dumb question at all! However, I'm going to let the hatching gurus answer on this one. I'm not much good with incubators.

Sphinx, you are welcome anytime!!!!!

Red, just found the other Icelandic last night

, Brian can attest that searching for one chicken around here can be a challenge. Each chick had grown to different sizes therefor were in different brooders. The blonde one had been in the brooder for month olds cause it never grew, the black in the next size and finally the red, who is rather large and grand is in the largest brooder. The black one now has slight golden neck feathers.... Sad note: the blonde one finally passed

(it had been weak since 2 weeks after hatch and NOTHING helped; it was the smallest and never grew; I had bad feelings about it but kept hoping it would snap out of it.

The black and red are healthy.... no worries there!!! Geez.... really have to take the camera out and just take pics. I get sidetracked on things that have to be done...ugh!!

I'll go get pics right now!!!!!!!!

Ohh, I'm sorry you lost the one

I need to figure out what is going on with my flock's genetics. If I have someone throwing malformed chicks, they're going to get booted from my breeding program. I'm glad that you still have the other two, though. I'd love to see pictures! Hoping the black one is a girl for you

The color of it sounds a lot like Vona, the little one I lost earlier this year.

Desert, I've had them last a while like that and pass. I'm so sorry. It's hard when you work with them for so long.

Brian said he loved your set ups!

Sara, Brian also liked your place. You two .. hope you know how lucky you are to live out where you can have all of these chickens! And horses!

Hello canebeds, not sure on this. I love the feathered incubators they also raise them for you. ;) Cynthia, Desert, Casa, any advice?

Welcome canebeds!
Ok here is my two cents on incubating...I just use the cheap styrobator, not by choice, it is just inexpensive and works fine...the still air I prefer over forced air, way better luck--I have one of each and only use the forced air when I have to. I also prefer to hand turn them, I have an autoturner in the forced air and only used it a couple times, I just don't like it, the eggs go "clunk" sometimes and it just seems more natural to hand turn them on their sides, like their mama does it :) The still air keeps the humidity just right, I take both red plugs out ...I dry hatch most of the time without adding water, unless the eggs are small then I add a little. Lots of this on advice from Cynthia, and she has had great advice. I would love to try one like Sphinx'...but I usually set more than a dozen at a time, so I have just stuck with what I know/have for now. Someday I would like to get a nicer setup. Of course shipped eggs never hatch great for me, but the local eggs have done great in my styrobator.. You just have to really keep an eye on it, sometimes mine sticks a little and has ruined a few batches by getting too warm.

So, I went to Wheeler Farm today to discover that I had 3 Silkie eggs. None of which were there yesterday, and I only have two hens (one of which was just broody, I thought they stop laying for three months?)

Anyways, I pray that this will mean good luck for me. However, I only currently have 4 eggs, and considering my recent luck that's not nearly enough.

I've decided to sell more chickens. Brian wanted my Light Brahma, Dawn, so there she goes. Anyone want my Buff Brahma rooster? He's loyal to his hens and he's not mean. He may run occasionally but he's mostly a friendly boy. He was born April 12 2012. :3

I'm trying to decide if it's likely that I can get a OEGB trio soon enough... If so my Sizzle rooster might be going too...

Oh, and on another note... Don't ask me about incubation advice, I've had awful luck with this borrowed Little Giants still-air incubator. xD

. We also name all of our incubators, this one is named Baby.

Here is one that i just used. It worked really well. I will probable use it again. We named this one Big Eyes.

Sphinx...What type of hens and rooster did you say you have? Im trying to figure out these chicks. Some look just like my FBCM that i rehomed. I think you said that was one breed of your roosters. These little blue/grey ones are really cute with their little beards and tuff's. One is really different, i think it came from a brown egg, it allready has all its wing feathers and is a little smaller then the rest. Do you have OEG?

Oh, I agree that the feathered incubators are the best. However, I have been looking in the job wanted ads and haven't found too many broody hens looking for work. lol IF I can find some Ayam Cemani eggs, they will be a ship in and will need a mommie, mechanical or feathered. Do we know what is the hatch ratio between a broody hen and an incubator?

Oh boy, that's slightly scary. :-/ such a rare and expensive bird (and beautiful!) I haven't ever used an incubator. So i cant compare but I had one hen that hatched 11 of 14 eggs, another that didn't do so well she obly hatched 3 of 9 then the winter hit and killed my good hen, this year out of the not so good hen I've gotten 0 of 5 and 0 of 6 so I think it just depends on the hen?
