Utah!

MY CHICKENS ARE GROUNDED! Little devils or I really should say one/two little devils. I knew they were finally laying eggs, I just knew it. I have 5 really nice nest boxes full of straw and shavings for them, all with a golf ball inside them as that's what I read to make them lay there. I have heard every morning this last week them doing what I was told was the egg song, I would more say screaming. I've looked, and looked everywhere for eggs.

Today my nephew is over here earning some cash, and my husband is having him make a list of the all the 1000s of ceramic molds in the side yard so we can figure out what to do with them since his friend just nicely brought them here when we were out of town, and is refusing to come get them.

Anyways in the middle of one pallet, where I couldn't not have seen into, they had to go through molds to get to it are 7, yes 7 small brown eggs. Little devils! I'm guessing that they are either the Bantam Cochin who is 5 months old or the RIR that is 4 months old. But I don't know if the RIR could have gotten in there. And they are tiny. I will have to take a photo, right now they are in the nest boxes for all the girls to see. I even put the RIR and the Cochin in the box with the eggs in hopes that it dawns on them.

HELP, how do I stop this.

And yes, I'm excited because I FINALLY have eggs. But I don't want to go on an egg hunt every morning. Little Devils!

Next question, they were in a 100% Shade and they are cold to the touch, how long do eggs stay good? I'm not going to plan on eating these ones, but I was just wondering now since I'm getting eggs.

Now who's are they. I have a 5 1/2 month old Cochin Bantam, a 4 1/2 month old RIR, and then I know they are not my 4 1/2 month old EE's. Next in line would me my 4 month old NN. Now they need to learn to use the nest box, the Ivy has been removed, but the ceramic molds, well those are staying for the time being. I put all the eggs in the nest boxes. One in each one so that way hopefully they will get it.

Now, with that being said, my money is on your RIR. And I find it hilarious that your girl worked her way into that fortress of solitude! Sounds a lot like some of my hens............

Desert, I was so excited to see the pictures! I can't believe those came from my flock! I stole a couple of the photos and posted them over on the Icee thread, hehe. I had to brag. I'll bet your little roo's daddy is Sven, who is my friendly boy.

I had a great weekend in all of the fresh air in Moab, and my cough started to clear up. Now I'm back to work, and it's back ugh. And, the weekend started on a sad note. I had to put down one of my Icee chicks. I think it may have gotten crushed by the hen, because it was very weak and had a bunch of yolk covering its back half. That's the first time I've had to put down a chick. Not fun

But, I do still have four healthy babies, for which I'm grateful.

Hope everyone is doing okay

LOL so let me see. You think by putting eggs in the boxes instead of golf balls they will lay in the boxes Not. Best way to train them is to keep them locked up for a few days so they get the idea of laying in the nest boxes them let them out after they have used it. Otherwise they will still keep laying around the yard. Good luck

Eggs can stay good for a couple of weeks without refridgeration. Usually even longer. In pioneer homes they had eggs on the kitchen counters

I don't know how to train them. I gave them nest boxes, 5 of them and was told to put golf balls in there. They have been in there like this for weeks. I just thought maybe the eggs in there might help. But I can keep them locked up in the morning. Boy are are they going to be made. I usually let them out around 7:30am, and they are like crying to get out if I"m a minute past. I heard the egg song around 10am this morning for a quick minute, ran outside to see who it was, but didn't catch them in the act. So you think around 11 am tomorrow? I just hate the thought of locking all 12 up just for the one chicken laying eggs. I hope the rest all learn from her using the box too.

You know what Silly I would not sweat it too bad...lots of my girls started out laying eggs in the run, in the coop on the floor...so far with no prompting from me every single one got it eventuallly. I think the longest one took a few weeks but usually it is after 5,6 or so eggs :) And as soon as one gets, it, the others see what is going on and follow---putting plastic eggs or golfballs in the nests could help, I have heard of that too for sure, but have not had to resort to that yet :)

My $ is also on the RIR :) But my NN started really early too, their eggs are lighter than the RIR usually, more tan, the RIR darker. Good luck girl! Hope they start getting it right.

Still hoping to find someone traveling through Logan to SLC? Chicks and quail and hatching eggs going, all free, so hoping to save a trip in gas if anyone is already heading that way :) Holler if you are and willing to haul a load that direction! I could offer a free chick for the help :D

The sad news--I lost a chick this morning, just failing to thrive, teeny little thing not growing. Just not quite right. Of course it was my favorite a little polka dotted fully feathered baby. Man when you pull those out of the brooder it just melts the heart. Rest in peace little buddy! :( I was really pulling for it, have been trying to get it to eat from a dropper, and just babied that little guy like crazy all week. For some reason this one just seemed so sweet, and I was really hoping it would make it. The others seem really quiet, I feel like they knew they lost a little friend. (Am I going crazy?) It sure seemed that way though.

More chicks hatching tonight. I see a black, not going to be ready for awhile...hopefully I won't stay up all night staring, I really am telling myself to sleep through the night and wait to see my surprises in the morning this time (Never happened yet. I even watch Sphinx' chicks hatch all night long on the internet...call me crazy again!!) It is just so amazing watching the little guys fight to come into the world :yesss:

Thanks Casa, I just want them to lay where they need to, I don't feel like egg hunting in the mess of the side yard with all the pallets of ceramics. I hope the little bantam isn't in there doing the same thing. Anyone know when she should start laying eggs, she is my oldest. Hatched around the first of March is my best guess, trash can chick. I also think my NN that I got from you Casa is what, now 4 months old, and in the last week she has gotten really, really red. I keep looking at her going, please don't be a boy, please don't be a boy, since I have a FBCM Rooster in the mix right now.

Poor little Rooster, he's probably ran a mile a day from the girls chasing him about. Just glad its chasing no pecking at all. They are finally letting him hang out within a few feet of them. But I found him a really good home, someone out in Eagle Mountain with some acres is going to take him in hopes for OE. Hope he works out for him. He really is a beautiful bird, and so very sweet. I wish I could keep him.

I still have a bunch of Bantam Chicks that need a good home. I was going to keep the Mille D'Uccle's to watch them feather out, but I don't really think I want to keep one, so if anyone is looking for a D'Uccle I have 2, they are 2 weeks old now. Still have 3 Buff, 4 Partridge, and 1 Black Cochin as well.

for flys i use a mixture of different things. lots of de, i use a auto fly sprayer that is safe to use around pets and sprays a blast every 15 minutes and it works very well but the refill is $10 a month but for me its well worth it. they have two different refill cans, one for flys and one for flys and mosquito's but i find the fly only one works for both too and its a dollar cheaper. i think the brand is country vet and i got it at cal ranch. its all natural. i also get hot shot brand natural flying insect control at lowes for spot spraying, its safe for use around pets and it works fantastic and lowes has it for $4 a can. i also hang fly ribbons and change them weekly. never get a fly trap as that will draw them in. also wild birds will eat flys so that is another good reason to attract wild birds :) doing all this has made the fly problem very minimal. i have much less flys than before i got chickens :)
