Red-- sorry to hear about your sussex. Very sad.

My son called me over to the window today that overlooks where our coop is. He said he thought one of our hens was a rooster. These are birds we've had for about a year now, so I explained to him that I would have noticed a crowing hen-jumping oddly feathered bird in the mix after all this time.

And then the stupid bird crowed. Loudly.

Multiple times.

He is the most pathetic looking rooster I have ever seen, but when I looked at him closely, sure enough, he has the larger wattles, a little larger rose-comb, and he is strutting around preening and flapping his wings and pretending he is a buff boy-toy. What a geek.

Can you say "dinner?"

Corvidae, you may have said earlier, but where did you get your cream legbars? Good luck on your eggs in lockdown.

Red, I'm so sorry for the loss of your chick. I would be sad. Very exciting that you get to see them daily now!!

Lisa, does your boy lav have a comb/wattles that are at all pronounced? When compared to a couple of my cockerel BLRW (who are a few days younger), there's just nothing there on mine. Sadly, of my 5 BLRW, I think at least three are boys. Ugh. I only wanted at most one.

Cynthia, those chicks sure went fast! I want a couple of EE, but I either want them to be 4-6 weeks old, or I want them to hatch in 4-6 weeks. And I want them to be sexed pullets. LOL

I want a mule now. More than bees and more than a fainting goat. I showed a property today and there were four mules and a horse in the pasture. One mule stuck to my side like glue, and was such a sweet, pretty girl. I want her.

He faked you out for a long time!

Donna---too funny about your rooster. What breed? That is so crazy he just started crowing for ya!

Sphinx---the big lavs comb is still wider, a little higher, and more pink than the other smaller one....I still do not dare give him up yet just in case, but wow the attitude sure makes me think its a cockerel. The thing that makes me hesitate---the feathering is so close to the smaller one. They were different at first, but now they really look the same, feathers and tails. It is the comb, the big thick legs and feet, and the attitude that make me think boy. The pea combs are so hard to tell. I really can see the three small rows on this one though, and a little more pink.

I am with ya on sexed pullets lol, it is hard to get attached then have to let them go :(

I have two EE's left..that are sexed! And you know I will hold them for you! Very puffy faces! One is lighter than the other. I'm guessing 4 weeks is a good time. I've had my little lavender outside for some time now. They go in and out of the coop all day. Mostly out with this beautiful weather.
I have been around mules..some are sweet, some are stubborn. Sounds like you found yourself a friend today..how cute. I love horses too. I have good memories of riding back in the day. Can't say that I ever sat on a mule.

Lisa, you got your girls placed fast. Must be that time of year! Good for you, sounds like you found the perfect place too.

I still have the two New Hampshires, two EE's, the three Silver Laced Wyondottes..two speckled sussex, and the rose comb leghorns. I am finding that those sussex are really sweet. I thought maybe it was just the one that I kept from back in Feb..but these are really laid back too. Calm when you pick them up. Oh, I have the one Araucana left..I think I know someone on here that wants it pretty bad..hint, his signature name starts with a C, then there's a h, then there's an i, then a c, then an o. I better save that one for him I guess. I have a lot more coming..I hope. So far I haven't had too many quit.

Red..that had to be soo sad to come home and see. I'm so sorry. No fun losing those babies. I sure have had better luck this time. I'm not too worried about going to bed tonight and waking up to one or two down. Crossing fingers for your Wellsummer doing ok. I have a hen outside..she lays the prettiest large speckled eggs! She has that sweet look in the eyes. Sweet face.
