Utah!

Back to the land of the internet! yay! My chicks that were at 21 days tonight.....well three are out flopping around, amazing! And two more pips. The other 5 5 no pips. Interesting because I put 5 in a carton upright and slanted, and 5 on the floor---all five in the carton pipped and three hatched. None on the floor pipped. Makes me wonder if that helps to be upright a bit. Going to keep trying that.....

Donna you were right when you said they might be early! I did not expect that at all. So far so good. I will post pics when they dry out---they are teeny little things! But pretty happy and spunky so far. Put the three in the brooder with my lonely girl, she was SOOOO happy. No fighting...just snuggling. And a quiet house now. Funny thing when I put the third one in, the older lonely girl (boy) was getting all protective over the first two when i put my hand in. Chest bumping my hand a bit. Standing in front of them to make sure I was not going to take them back out. It was kinda sweet :)

Lisa--

Super exciting that they are hatching, and interesting about the egg carton vs floor thing! Hopefully, all the others will hatch tonight for you--I've noticed that these guys go a lot faster from pip to zip than any of the shipped eggs I've had. I would bet you will have more pips before bedtime and wake up to fuzzy butts peeping!

Hi Brad, long time no see. I put this up on the breed/gender too..and I have two that think pullet, and one thinks roo. Then you think a girl too..so, here I go again. Will wait on HER! I hope it's a girl, she really is pretty..see that other pretty girl haning out with her. They are buddies. Is your Pencil looking that big? These two sound like ducks, their voices are changing. Too funny.

i think the tail may make people think roo but thats just one part of sexing, she shows more girl signs so i say girl and i am about 80% sure. yeah my pencil looks huge, her and the buff are very close. both the pencil and the buffs voices are changing, its so cute!

I think girl. I hope! Her face sure looks like my Shirlee. They could be twins! The tail curls a little, but i would not give up yet :)

Donna: So far so good. Missing a few pips from the floor eggs, but we have 5 total out and 1 pipped. So far they all look like the blue....no splash, one that is dark that might be black, but looks more blue to me :) Lots of little red chipmunks. I could not get the backs to show the stripes very well in the artificial light, will get a couple tomorrow during the day.

I love this one, it is extra fat :)

Wow, this forum moves so fast I can't even find my last post. Just an update... I think my Cuckoo Maran is going to be a momma!

She went broody (and she's not fun to collect from) so we skipped her a few days. Then it was a few more, then I decided they would be not good for eating so why not... I went out and candled tonight, had to google but it looks like we have fertile eggs, maybe 2-4 days along. I'm having a hard time believing that many are fertile.

On the downside, and I should hv taken a marker with me, is we caught another hen laying in there with her today and that clutch she's on is about 12 and counting.

I'm wondering if I should move her into a dog cage that is chick safe. Right now the coop/nesting boxes are about 4' off the ground and chain link enclosure for run. A baby would never know to use the ladder down, much less up.

Now I'm kinda bummed I didn't save the little Amercauna blue banty and her sky blue robin egg under there. I know she'll lay one tomorrow - would it be too late to slip under? I think I might even have one collected already...not layed on just room temp (in the house).

IF they hatch, it'll be a strange bunch for sure. Only possible dads are my banty EE's (and that is only while out free ranging) and the black silkie I got from that nice young teen. The eggs are from my EE's, the cuckoo maran or wellsummer (hard to tell those apart sometimes), leghorns, RIR and a banty patridge cochin.

So ya'll think I should get her moved soon? Oh, instead of the dog run I could just put her in their sun room. It's predator proof and full enclosed (except maybe chick size by the gate that we could fix with netting once hatched. She knows that area and might accept that better than a dog run in the garage.

Also, because it was cool outside and she was getting torked, I didn't pay attention to putting them back like I found them. Was that a bad thing being this early in the hatch?

I'll be thrilled if they hatch but jealous. "I" like playing chicken mom, these chickies won't see me as Mom.

Kinda takes the fun out.
