Utah!

So how is everybody?! There haven't been any posts here in a week--I guess everyone's spring cleaning

I bought two bantam polish chicks from IFA last week

so cute with their little bulbous bumps of fuzz on top of their heads. Now I just need a silkie!

I've been fine! Been packing and planning move to Salt Lake, though it seems like the family is moving into an acre sized lot, and leaving me and my boyfriend the one that isn't even a fifth of an acre. Hopefully can find a way to get 10+ growing chicks there and keep them.

Polish! I love how they look. What colors are they?

I'm enjoying today's lovely weather - a little breezy, but I love the sunshine. I'm avoiding IFA & CAL Ranch right now - there's no way I can deal with fuzzy butts right now, as much as I'd love to. I'm living in crazy town - over the weekend we tore out all the base cabinets, flooring, and appliances in preparation for installing about 600 feet of tile - kitchen, dining, laundry, entry, powder room. We got the most of the backer board down when we found that our two main installers (my Dad and brother-in-law) are NOT available this week after all.

My Dad has to go to California for my aunt's funeral, and the brother-in-law hurt his back over the weekend. So all of my cabinets, dining room furniture, an 8-foot island, fridge and 8 chairs and 6 bar stools are in the living room, along with all the regular living room furniture. My kids think it's brilliant - 'Look! I can play the piano and get a snack from the fridge at the same time!' And I have no laundry to speak of (all of that is in the garage). For at least another week. I've got a four-year old with strep throat, a serious case of Spring Fever myself (I was going to build some cold frames this weekend), and 650 feet of tile in boxes in my dining room. I'm pretty sure if I brought some baby chicks home at this point, the house will explode.

Sigh. Maybe I'll be able to find some chicks at the end of the month. Although I'm only wanting Delawares.

Anyone attending the UFPA show next week? I'm hoping to (if I can find the front door by that point).

I'm planning on going to the UFPA next week. Sounds like your house is crazy right now! Sorry to hear about all the chaos, it will give you something to look back on and laugh about! I'd love to hear why you like Delawares. In fact, I'd like to hear from others on this thread what breed you prefer and why. Me... I like the Americauna's, (sorry, I know I spell it wrong) I've got 2. I like that their eggs are so pretty, I get a green and a light pink, and I like that their combs are small. I have 1 Cochin, and I love that when she walks she looks like the old fashioned toy paddle ducks that kids push around. I have other hens that I love, but those are my favorites right now.

My upstairs neighbor got RIR's and they lay like champs. They are with my chickens, so they have never been treated differently. They lay the best of all of the flock, and they are the most tame and friendly.

I got Americauna's, Cuckoo Marans, and Wellsummers fuzzy butts a couple of weeks ago. I'm also getting a couple of Marty's Delawares because I hear they are good layers too. I want to have a multi-color egg basket, but if I could only have 2-3 hens I would go with RIR's based on my experience with them.

For what that's worth...

I've never had Delawares, but I've heard good things about them - good layers, good personalities, dual purpose birds. I thought I'd get a couple and see how they do. I have a mixed flock - 3 RIRs, 2 BR, 3 Black Sex Links, 2 SLW, 1 Australorp. My best layers are the RIRs, hands down - they are egg laying champs, laid all through the winter, great big brown eggs, really nice personalities (mine are friendly, but we've had them since they were little). I like all of my other breeds, but for different reasons. The Barred Rocks are friendly, great foragers, really good layers. The Black Stars are really good layers, too. One of them lays enormous white eggs, while the other two lay large light brown eggs. One of my girls is laying a pinkish egg. I think it must be my Australorp. She is so pretty and my kids love her. The SLW are not great layers, but they're sweet and so pretty. One of them likes to sit on your lap and beg for treats.

I'd like to get a Buff Orpington, and maybe a Jersey Giant, but just because I think they're cool looking. I'd consider getting an Ameracauna/EE, if I knew it laid blue eggs. My sister got a few, and they laid the ugliest muddy green/tan eggs. Not a color I'd want. And since I've heard they aren't great layers, it makes no sense to me to get a bird that lays a few ugly eggs, when I could have a RIR that lays pretty brown eggs almost every day.

If I could only have one breed, it'd be the RIRs.

Now this looks like it could be a fun adventure for someone.... http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=9881102&cat=113&lpid=

3 chickens or more have made thier home in my yard. They been there for a year. They like to climb up the pine trees. Anyone who can remove them and TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM! May take them

The wheels are turning, but I don't think I'll have time for a few weeks myself... bummer!

I felt silly asking if I could have it off for a chicken show, but my coworkers are all pretty understanding.

My DH banned me from KSL classifieds for a while after I answered two... and ended up with horse with a nasty leg wound (chased by a pack of dogs through a barbed wire fence), a toeless chicken and a footless chicken.

Otherwise I'd probably be all over that ad.
