Utah!

We got a year old BLRW in mid-May from a reputable breeder.  She still hasn't laid!  It's been 2 months!  And she is mean to my other ladies which makes me mad.  My one EE seems to be at the bottom of the pecking order and usually hangs by herself and kind of keeps her tail down.  She doesn't seem sick, her poop looks normal, she's been eating and drinking.  Is she just "depressed" to be at the bottom?  How much longer should I hold on to this BLRW in hopes that she will lay?  Pretty soon the rest of them will be laying...

I would rehome that one......

hey all. sorry about all the loss and sickness and all that :( its hard to keep up on who is sick and who has has loss etc so forgive me if i do not say something. also welcome to all the new people to this thread :) meat cows would be fun, we thought of renting some land to do that but will just have to buy a side of beef. it would be fun to do pigs too but once again we lack land. i am just waiting for the wild hog population to take off by the great salt lake so we can have hog hunting in utah. i also would love to try meat chickens but i lake space and i do not want to proses them myself.

My family had meat cows. They were really friendly and I think they were raised for about a year and a half before they were the right size and weight for butcher. You guys might look into heifers and angus cattle for good beef, the holstein bull wasn't a good beef cow.

Wow, guess I should check in more...I am very behind.
Hope I didn't miss too much...I would go back through and read them all but the words keep moving on the screen.
I hope everyone is having a good day.

I got another egg from my cucckoo today...On the ground.
How do I get her to lay in the nest box? I have never had one lay on the ground for more than one time before....Is she just a slow learner?

Birdman - I agree! If they weren't so expensive we could add to the feral herd. :)

Sphinx - That fabric makes a striking block! I love the brights in kaleidoscopes. (I have a flame pattern or a spiky swirl that would look good on that.)

I've only used glow in the dark on Halloween wall hangings that wouldn't get washed much. I think it's the same thing as the glow fabric, where it 'recharges' when it's exposed to light and then fades. It looks really neat in a spider web design. Metallic is also intended for 'gentle' laundering. Quilting is .015 psi. (width inches x length inches x .015). I'm out of batting right now. Need to place pre-Christmas order. (Should I be PMing this?)

Even the Holstein calves we raised were better than most store meat. Maybe to compensate for the pasturing, you could buy the feed-out corn? We add corn to their diet the last month, they are on pasture only before that.

Kimmy - My little hen that's the lowest of the pecking order behaves like that. It makes me sad. I try to give her extra treats. Look at the spurs of your year old hen to see if it's really only 1 year? I think sometimes even reputable people can lose track of who's who. I got a SLW as a 'year old laying hen' last year. She never laid well.

Minkee is a very soft fleece fabric that feels like the softest rabbit you can imagine. It's popular as a back on baby quilts or anything snugly that's not traditional. It's available in 60" widths, or you can buy a blanket to use as a back on larger quilts. I'd like to have a chimp pick up all the little pieces of fluff it creates!

I am in the same boat. I have a blrw that is a year and 1/2 old. She is so pretty but becoming a bully. When I get home from hosp I am going to put her in solitary for a few days then put her back in yard. I am told that puts them back down in pecking order

Good to see you here sundance! Hope you are feeling better!

Look at what I did this morning. I took some fertile eggs over to Hector..(Chiko) and also my Little Red. Got some cute pictures of those two that are broody together. He says that he has separated them, but the little cochin keeps going back to that nest. Guess they will do this together. Plus, I got some silly pictures of me and Hector..he's such a good kid. Very tall good kid! He's holding Little Red.
The BO is all puffed up, the chochin is just looking at me, like, hope she doesn't move me. She hogged
all the eggs at first while we were putting some in. Then we put some further under Syndie, the buff.

It's a tight fit, but they are determined!

What a good kid, I probably embarrassed him..but he took it. :)

See, a good sport!

He loves his chickens, and he loves ducks! And, game birds.

Here is a really pretty splash cochin he has for sale. She has a crooked beak, but she eats fine. This
is gorgeous!

Ok Lisa, these eggs are blue! The camera didn't even pick up how blue! And guess where he got the hen
that is laying these? Cal Ranch! The hen is for sale, she has a lot of blue and has some beige in her
coloring. Wish you could see these eggs in person. Wow.

Oh, and look at what else he has. A cute little white crested black polish ~ girl. :) This made me
excited to see if mine hatch. Set my eggs last night.

She has a sweet face.

Do you have golfballs in the next boxes?? Or you could try spying on her and if she looks like she's sitting, put her in a next box, if you have time for that...

Oh man, jealousy swirling all around my head. Blue eggs, a female polish that is black, and chickens sitting on eggs. He has it made!
Cute pics of you guys!
Ditto!!

And so sorry Red about all the headaches you're having... I've had times like that in my life too, in fact, DH and I have had a TERRIBLE year (not marriage wise, but work wise and other nonsense stuff) Part of the reason I insisted on getting chickens again this year.. they help me zen=)

I say go for it on the meat heifer, what the heck??

The hens are laying better today after having all that rain.. we'll see how they hold up as it gets hot again... Sold all the extras so hopefully no one needs eggs again soon=)

Oh, and Lisa... I hear you on looking at hatching eggs, I do it and I don't even have an incubator=) Just maybe willing my BO to go broody, lol...

Moriah... yeah, those chickies need some more friends, don't they?? So far, my luck has been pretty consistent on straight run chicks I've gotten... 3 cockerels, 3 pullets... I like your 1:5 ratio better, though=)
