Utah!

My turkeys always do well in the cold as long as they get plenty of food. In fact, more often than not they prefer to be out and about instead of staying in their house. I just let them do what they want to do. As for chicks in the winter,...............I've got them! My husband wired one of our out buildings so I have four big brooder boxes setup with two lamps each in case one fizzles out. My oldest babies are three weeks old now and almost ready to go to a "big baby" box to make room for the next newbies. So, if anybody wants to take the plunge and get an early start on chicks, I'm hatching black copper marans. My goal is to have plenty of started pullets come spring. I wish I had cameras in my coops, however, so I can gather all the eggs before they get overly chilled or even FREEZE in this insane cold!

Pawtraitart, I think I am going to get a couple started pullets from you this spring, but I'm going to wait for a bit. I hear you on the freezing though- I'm checking for eggs a couple times a day, and I'm still having an egg or two a week split.

Cynthia, I don't want chicks for me right now! Quit trying to tempt me! LOL

i broke down and put a heat lamp in my coop yesterday...I have a few that look like they have a little bit of frostbite, and no one would get off the roost. With 3 little runs coming off the coop there is just too much cold air. They all looked lots better this morning, it was cold in there but not as extreme as outside. Hopefully this cold spell won't last too long. It is brutal, goats are doing ok. At least they all cuddle up together and keep the barn warmer.

The temp on my thermometer says -16.7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please let this be the lowest it gets

. It's been a few years since it's stayed and gotten this cold.

I am curious, does anyone know how to become NPIP certified in UT? From what I can tell you email the state vet, but there aren't details about what happens after that. I also followed a link and it looked like there are only four people in the state who are...which doesn't seem right either. I have a long ways to go before this is true,y a concern for me, but am trying to research before I start anything.

Lilwanis, I'd kind of be interested to find that out, too. I don't know how you go about getting certified for it, or even how long it takes.

Gamebirds, I hope your bantams are okay. It got down to -4 where I am in West Valley, but we had everyone tucked away in the "spa". I worry about them with such bitter cold.

I refuse to ask what breeds of chicken people are planning on bringing to Chickenstock. I'll get in so much trouble if I start planning on adding more girls (or boys) outside of the ex-battery hens

And you call yourself a shameless chicken addict...Psshhht you are going to spoil your reputation if you keep turning down chicks lol This is no time for self control. Spring is coming! haha!

Lilwanis, I think that there's many people who COULD be NPIP certified- they meet criteria, but choose not to do it. I don't know exactly what happens.

It was -6 this morning when I went to to gym. I had a protein shake with me. I only drank about half before I got there. When I went outside an hour later, it was frozen solid. Awesome.

I checked on my birds this morning, and they looked cold but ok. I think I want to get a stronger light though; it's so cold. My legbar rooster's comb is looking rough. I think it'd be better if he'd quit fighting with the marans.

Gamebirds, what are they doing, other than looking miserable?

I think the news said that last night was the coldest it's gotten in 10 years.
