Utah!

Aww Cynthia, that big fat Marans egg hatched! That baby is awesome. I still really wondered if two would come out lol! And NO wishing more roosters on me, I had my share last year, I am trying to spare myself this season :) I love your chicks from Red's eggs, they are just so cute!

Red, I love mush too, we all adore you :) You are so cute. And your chickens are so cute. Awww. :) Good luck with your broody and eggs! And so glad you did not crash!!.

Donna, glad all is well at Fort Chicken. Glad no more theft! Sounds like you have all the roosters this year, he he, and noisy ones to boot. Glad you figured out that dark egg, but bummed your Isbar is not what you thought.

Blu, so glad the little gal is doing well! They are such a cute bunch. Are you done "hatching" goats yet or do you have more on the way? You have been a busy busy girl!

Madchicken, your little broody is so cute. Good luck with yours too, hope you can get some cute little babies!

Sphinx, you have some serious self control not to hatch. Esp with those sex link eggs! That is awesome!

Joybells, glad Shirlee is laying again. She looks happy as a clam in your shower! I agree with Gary, everybody needs a house chicken :) Preferably one that does not crow.

Pictures of my 8 babies from my OE hatch.

The two big ones from the Marans eggs are, first one, by the splash at the bottom..and
the real big one is in the back laying down next to the blue. Can't tell in the picture how
big they are. They are larger than the others.

I think the one up front is a splash..crossing fingers for a girl.

The blue

The I think is a splash

so has anyone here had luck introducing one chicken into a flock? i mean of course i would take things slow and careful. but i have only introduced them in pairs. if i get another chicken i only need one. i want me a legbar still lol.

Bird man- I have done it twice to the same flock and never had a problem really. At the time I didn't know you should only add them in pairs though

Well Sherlee spent the first half of the winter out on the porch in a XL dogcrate. I had to keep her in a much smaller crate last month because I was visiting family and the dog needed the crate back. It's only been this past month that she's been in the shower and getting extra light in the evenings. :) So I think she had plenty of excuses for taking a break, especially with the traveling.

@ Red I'm glad you didn't crash! I didn't see that until just now.
Boy that sounds scary, it almost makes me want to put off driving lessons for yet another year. But at that rate I'd never be able to join in the chicken train fun.

@Cynthia those chicks are adorable! I'm rather fond of that blue one. It almost speaks to me... it's calling me... I must resist the urge to snatch it up regardless to my current inability to do such...

cyndi, let me know if you want a couple..Gary is coming your way..he lives close by here. :)

Brad, I have tried so hard with my Welsummer, but she acts too afraid of them. I think that is the key factor. If they don't run, they do better. This Welsummer is a chicken!

And the others know it. She goes into the coop and stays. So, after trying a couple of different times, I've put her back with the younger ones. Now the blue girl out there is ready to be put in with them too..so, will try that. It's hard when they are all in the run..and not free ranging. Free ranging .. much easier.

I would take an upper ranking hen and separate with the chick. Give about three weeks min and mix them back in. The chick will run to the hen for protection and the other hens will still have respect of the dominate hen. But this is just a suggestion, not a cure, im pretty sure this would work with my flock but then again every ones flock is different.

Here are some of my new chicks. I am very confused about the big difference between the BLRWs that I hatched and the one that I picked up from Sunny Brook Farm. Is this a hatchery difference?

Looks like the wellies are watching a tennis match

Did you know how had a Marans life was? I had no idea. Also, photo shoots...exhausting!

Never really had a problem with putting a new girl in there, as long as they are about the same size. Contrary to the general methods, I just put the new one in and keep an eye on them. There's usually some bitching for a couple of days as they settle the pecking order, but they settle soon enough. Our newest is Dandelion, the Swedish Flower. She got crabbed at for about a day, the suddenly was BFF with the Andalusian. Now they both snuggle down with Gimpy the Footless every night in the bedding and no one gets worked up at each other. I've never had them actually attack a new girl--just puff up and squawk for a while. Of course, my coop does have an attic, which gives the new ones somewhere to hang out if the other girls get too snotty.

The young 'uns I do keep separate. The big girls will take them down in a heartbeat.

I should be having Legbars in a couple of weeks here, assuming the hatch goes well. I think I have about 20 Legbar eggs in the incubator and I need to get 7 girls or so. Have to see what actually hatches, though.
