: I know some people swear by the sand in the run. I may be persuaded myself at some point, but for now, I am trying to keep large amounts of compost as I slowly, piece by piece, convert my yard into a food source. I blame it on the chickens. All I wanted was a pet and was able to persuade DH that since they lay eggs, they would make a good pet. See if he ever listens to me again

Yep, my husband's thinking the same thing!!!

All I wanted was a rescue greyhound, that's out of the question now with chickens, but I wonder if he ever thinks, "Shoulda let her get the greyhound." :gig

Here you go, this is what the chicken lady has to say about sand.  I tried it..didn't like it..but she really makes it sound wonderful.

I don't care for it too much either--my run is big enough that the dirt just seems to recycle the poop..I never really shovel it out, when I put straw down it gets all broken down into little bits and just sort of all seems to take care of itself, except in the winter when it is wet then I shovel out the muck a few times because it gets more packed....but in the summer it just stays dry and blends in with the dirt after they dig holes all over and churn the dirt up. I have a covered run though, so it stays pretty dry so that helps alot. In the winter the snow comes in from the side a little.

I keep thinking if the run ever starts to smell or become pooped over I would shovel it all into my garden and put 6 inches or so of fresh dirt in there. That stuff would be awesome for the garden I bet! I do add DE to my run and i like it alot it keeps the flies and smell down for sure. I sprinkle 3 or 4 cups about every 100 sq feet. Maybe 4 -5 times a year

Well I think I might try the straw, that's true they will probably break it all down. I think the problem really is they are under the deck, so for 1 they don't get much water that goes through, and we were already talking about put a tarp for the winter. But the dirt is very hard packed, very hard packed, and its just not draining.

Managed to get rid of the pullets and the cuckoo maran hen.......Now I have the Ameraucana Trio left and the SLW....This guy might come back for the trio though, he really liked them.
PLus all the meat boys that need to go ( I am not able to physically butcher them) They are getting close to that age.

Oh ya and the broody FBCM....Not sure what to do with her.

Uh oh. Now who is going to give my DH the butchering lesson? He wants to learn how but no one to show him lol. I want to know how too, just in case I ever need to, but won't be doing that unless I am starving lol

I totally want to see how its done too, not ever planning on doing it, but would like to know how its done. I'm sure I could manage to actually kill the bird, but I want to know how to get all the feathers off.
