Utah!

I know Lisa, I would love for the first one to be a girl, I don't want to get my hopes built up. It's the largest of them all. :/ I know that doesn't always mean roo..but..the wing tips are pretty tight too.

Oh I so love the baby pictures! Gary sorry about just the one hatched, that's the pits. Its okay Wendy I had to go up to pick my hubby up in the morning.

We've been watching your eggs most of the day. So that has been fun.

So I got curious, and since I was 100% positive those chicks where not going to hatch, I decided to look at them. They would have be so adorable too, both here solid reddish black color. One actually broke through to the air sack, not sure why it would have stopped. The other one even if it did hatch would haven't made it, unless you all told me how to fix it. Its whole abdomen was exposed. :(

So with that said, was this an issue with temp. or humidity? I'm sure the abdomen was something that was either, but with the one that did break through the air sack? I'm just trying to not have a repeat with the Silkie eggs I'm getting on Monday.

Thanks :D

I had a chick start to hatch but then died. So I cracked it open and that same thing was wrong. But I had a hen sitting on the eggs so I don't know what It would be.

No way this just happened. I was in the room looking down at the chicks, DH was going to head for bed..I was talking out loud to him, when all of a sudden I hear...urrr a urrr! One little chick was stretched up on it's feet, with it's neck also stretched up long..and out came this sound I have never heard before from a chick. I had to hurry and look up earliest crow. I had read that some had them start as chicks, and sure enough, there was one that did it on day 4. I must have scared this little one. I had been talking softly to them before, then I was talking out loud to my hubby, and next thing I'm hearing is this little scream. Glad I was looking at them, I know which one it was. I will have to watch for that..try and talk loud again when it's been quiet in the house. That was sooo strange!

That baby did it again this morning! Oh boy, this is going to be one noisy rooster. Although, on another thread I talked about it in, a gal came on saying she had one start crowing within the first week, then it stopped, until it was older. I wish I could get it taped, just don't know how to put it on the net.

Cynthia that is so crazy! i wish they would all do that :D Then we would know early. Which one was it? Not your favorite I hope. Or the silver. I had a showgirl yell like that when we opened the garage door one day, at just a few weeks old, then never did it again until way later so I could not tell who it was. Garage door got lots of use trying to get him to do it again, but it only worked once. I think I had three out there, and I just kept staring at them....who did that?! Haha. That would be really funny to see a tiny baby do it.

Sphinx those babies are so cute! Love the little red foreheads. Does the OE look crested? Can't tell from the video.... And I was trying to see if the GCM have the spots on their heads like the other barred breeds? Just curious if they have them. I was surprised they were so dark, I have never seen the GCM chicks before, I was thinking they would be more golden or gray. I love penguin chicks!

I know with the regular cuckoo Marans, there is something to the spot---the bigger spots are either girls or boys, I cannot remember how it goes, Doughie posted it I think. I was inclined to think the big spots were the females but I might have it backwards.

Actually now I think it is the other way around. LOL to middle age. Can't remember anything!

Cynthia, that's funny about your little baby rooster! He sure thinks he's the man. Remember when one of my turkeys started strutting at 2 weeks old?

I just got to meet Silly and her two darling little kids. They wanted to come out back and see the chickens and turkeys. My girls didn't know what to think about that. They need to be around kids more often, haha. And both of my black turkeys were gobbling, so until the one that I thought might be a hen lays, I'm just going to go ahead and assume that I have two boys out there

Ah well. Good eatin', anyway.

I'm sooo excited! I got a bunch of my seeds yesterday that I had ordered! (Did I already say this here?) And today I was out collecting seeds from our crab apple. Silly, I'm sure you thought I was nuts, haha. Good to see you!

GARY - Wherefor art thou, fellow hatcher? I sent three Icelandic eggs with Silly for you. At least two are from my hen "Psycho", who seems to have good viability. Enjoy

Nope, not crazy at all, I need to plant some fun stuff this summer for the chickens. Thanks again for the eggs, I'm Praying they will all hatch this time, and they are such a nice beautiful color, I'm so excited to have laying hens with color. With my luck they will all hatch and be boys. So very sorry about my wild children chasing your chickens.

I'm going to give Gary a call again, and see where he is at.

All this talk of hatching and chicks is making me see things. I think one of my SFH hens is broody. I'm suppose to be cutting down on the flock, not trying to add more... But I could probably claim she stole the eggs if a few happen to find their way under her. Haha
