I planted three little blackberry seeds today as a test. Yay!

Well, I talked to the fiancee this morning, and because of all the debt the court gave him from the ex wife, he cannot afford to refinance the house, so he has to sell it. And most of the money goes to the ex. So, we are working on what to do about housing when we are married.

Good news is that he managed to sell his tractor and horse trailer and raise enough money to keep the property he has in Delta, so at least we'll have that. I wish I could buy everything for him so that he could keep it.

So today was candling day. And I have 14 for sure, 7 I can't see in because they are too dark of eggs, and 1 that looks a little off, but I left if in there because I wasn't too sure. So I have 22 still left in the incubator. I did take out one big blue/green egg from Red, it never developed and the air sack was actually dead center, I took out 3 light brown eggs from the NN mixes, and then 1 Silkie egg. It started to develop but had a huge blood ring, and no black eye like the rest of them, so I took that one out too. So hopefully we have a least something hatch this time around. And hopefully at 14 day's I can see in the 7 dark eggs. I'm hoping the dark eggs are growing, I can see the slightest outline of the air sack, that is about it.

Well, my chickens are going to jail this week! LOL! Those darn egg eaters. I am bound to find out who the culprit is. So to jail one goes at a time. I hate to do this but I am getting no eggs because of this. I did today put some mustard in some eggs to try and get them to stop. Hopefully it helps. ERRR!!! If not the whole folk will become dinner and I'll be starting over in the spring.

How did I get found out! Hello, been stalking this message board learning about raising chickens from your experiences you all post. I'm new to raising chickens. We had four pullets to start off with, a Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, and two Silver Laced Wyandottes. Then we acquired a fifth who wandered into our yard looking for a new home, the poor dear. Not sure what breed she is, maybe someone can tell me if I can Lenard how to post a pic. She looks like a RIR but has a few black feathers on her tail. Anyhow, she was a rescue situation. Thought she belonged to our neighbors and was somehow getting through the fence. We kept shewing her back over to the neighbors yard hoping she'd go back home but kept coming over to our yard looking to join our small flock. She kept looking for a way into the run. Finally we went to neighbors to tell them one of their hens kept coming over and my DH was told that someone had abandoned her in their yard. So our neighbor said to name her Priscilla and call her ours! That's exactly what we did.

Are you getting a few eggs through this winter? I do use a heat lamp in the winter, so I have eggs.
Where are you? I'm in Spanish Fork.
I have three Red Sex Link girls..two that are laying, one that is close. An EE that is close to laying. Two Leghorns..just love them! And, a blue Olive Egger. She has decided it's time to go broody. Little stink!
Coming up as I sell a couple of my older hens, are, two Rhode Island Reds..and a couple of Rhodebars.

What am I supposed to do with a broody hen in the winter?? I have eggs I can put under her. She is determined. I have pushed her off the nest for the last few days. She actually started staying on her own egg along with a couple of others about a week ago..but when I took her off, she stayed off. Not the last couple of days, and especially today. And, no egg today. Right back she goes..to the golf ball I leave in there for the two getting ready to lay. I put her in the Nursery Hutch. Thinking I may give her 3 eggs from my bator that are only about 5 days old. LF cochin. Trying to think of the changes I would need to do if I let her raise babies out there.

@ Cynthia12, yes we are getting 5 sometimes 3 eggs per day from our gals. The original four started laying in Aug

ust and September. We got our Orpington and Barred Rock May last and our two Wyandottes in April last. We just moved out this way up to Mapleton beginning of August from Delta. Don't know oh long will be here in Mapleton, as we are staying at my mothers home while my DH looks for another job,he was laid off. Anyhow, Pracilla, when we took her in upon close inspection was in rough shape. She had quite a few feathers missing from her saddle and was under weight and scrawny. She acted like she had been traumatized. We put her in one of our empty coops for quarantine before introducing her to our flock and she would not come out to forage in her small area. She just wanted to stay inside and hide herself away. I inspected her for lice, mites etc... She was clear. So we just kept feeding her and watching her as time went by. She seemed healthy except her original underfed and roughed up condition. We had no idea how old she was. Eventually we put her in the barn with our other gals and she stayed away from the others would not go outside just stayed in the corner. Our girls wouldn't let her near them at first. Then Ethel, our Barred Rock who is top of pecking order started bullying one of the Wyandottes and we found her sidling up to Priscilla and roosting next to her. Eventually new pecking order is established and they are all getting along fine now. Priscilla never layed an egg for us for quite sometime so we figured she must of been abandoned because she had stopped laying and was an older hen. Then one day we started getting big beautiful darker reddish-brown eggs and started wondering who that came from and realized it must be Priscilla! By then she had put on some weight and her feathers grew back in and looked much healthier. So, for rescuing her and nurturing her back to health she is blessing us with some eggs. She is a sweet hen even tempered and mild mannered and is getting used to being handled and coddled by us. We took her in about November just about three weeks before our first big snowfall. So glad she found us. Oh btw if the pic I posted came through this was taken in beginning of August last the girls car ride from Delta to their new home in Mapleton. Ha, such good girls they loved their car ride! My poor back seat! Ahh well, nothing a little disinfectant and a rag couldn't handle. Lol.
