Utah!

So much for gathering Silkie eggs for a couple month. My splash hen found my broody white hen in the small coop and climbed in the nest box next to her and lay ed an egg and decided she was going to hatch it. What the heck is up with my Silkies? On the other hand i found a egg under the white Silkie this morning that looked a lot like my frizzles. I'm going to have to watch close to make sure they are hers and not my B-BSL or one of my new girls starting to lay.

Oh shoot. I'm sorry, and I took 3 Splash and 1 White from you. Well if all 4 hatch, you can have them back if you would like. Of course after momma is done with them. I'm kind of hoping for a nice Splash Pullet though. I don't have a splash anything outside yet. And that would most likely be the only one I would keep if they all hatch. I'll keep you posted if you want too, they are at day 8. :D Everything looked good last night. All 4 Silkie eggs are growing. The other LF was non-fertile so I pulled it this morning.

This evening, for your viewing pleasure, I would like to introduce to those interested a selection of my Banty chicks. They will be two weeks old on this Monday, tomorrow. I have really enjoyed them and I am pleased as punch with them.

I am brooding them on the floor of my wood shop, an converted granary. There are both types of Seabrights, and Old English BBReds, Ginger, and Silver Duckwings. Compared to my Large Fowl, these guys are jumpers and fliers already! The feathering is coming along nicely and it has been somewhat easy for me to do this batch. The little devils are feed billers to be sure, but I forgive the little birds, whatever it takes to get them to four weeks is just fine by me. I hope to get the new coop done in time to move the LF over to the lay house, and these guys can take over the older, but bigger grow out coop.

I love my chicks…

* I might even have a few new Rooster Cogburn photographs and some other items later in the evening.

So RC also known as Rooster Cogburn, has taken sole ownership of my entire flock. It would seem he has his favorites, which are shown it the photograph below. He has sorted out all of the Barred Rock pullets, along with one Astrolop and keeps them on the roost with him. We took this picture with a cell phone and flash, but it shows a group of happy birds settling down for the night.

We have jokingly decided to call him Brigham Young this week of the 24 of July, only. In celebration of the founding of our dear, beloved Utah. Well that and he makes no bones keeping his twenty hens under a constant and watchful eye. One might say the all seeing eye…

The roost is a 14 foot ladder with a 16 foot 2" x 6" affixed to it. Karole likes the 'look' of the ladder, I like them not having to teeder todder back and forth on the roost all night. Summer nights are a wonderful thing, something to be enjoyed to the fullest. However I was over the mountain toward Riverside today, in Box Elder county, and they are cutting grain. No, not on the Sabbath but the trucks are in the field and combines are set out and ready to jump into action by noon tomorrow. This can only mean that snowball will be hitting us in the rear end sooner than we might wish.

I've not had a bird in the local Cache County fair for many years, and I might see if I can round up the grandson and have him enter RC in the fair this year. He just looks so regal as he prances around the place, it might be fun for everyone.

Best to all and wishing for a nice week ahead,

RJ

Gary, my Rhodebar is in the broody breaker. I thought she was getting there. Didn't want to get off of her egg yesterday, then I heard it..cluck..cluck..cluck..
Today, I let her go to the nest box to see if she would lay again. Waited a while..no egg. She fluffed up. I got the cage out. She is outside under the apple trees. Poor thing, she got loose when I went to give her water earlier..she ran faster than any hen I've ever seen run..back to that nest box. :/ I caught her early at this, so, hopefully it will only be for a few days, then about a week before she is laying again.

RJ--Those banties are adorable. I look forward to seeing RC in the fair, you should totally do it! I don't recall seeing and BR roos last year.

Silly and Bitsy thanks for the offers to help with chicken train to Cynthia. I will figure out our exact timeline and see if we can work something out, will need to see what time we can be in SLC.

Thanks Karen but i did manage to get some before they went broody. I have 7 splash in my incubator day 11 and all of them look good. I also have 5 more splash eggs and 4 from my white that i am giving to my broody's tomorrow after work.

Cynthia, does that actually work? The only problem with trying to break her is I'm at work from 6am to 6pm and my kids are not that reliable. I would have to put her in something large enough to hold water and food and i think this would probable not help much. She would probable think she was in her on private hotel room.

She is in a rabbit cage..at least that's what it looks like to me. It's up on legs. Will have to get a photo of it. I haven't tried it before. I am going by what the chicken chick said..a few days. Will see I suppose.

Red..been there done that! Don't do that again..it does hurt! Are you ok? I've been bitten, thrown off, and stepped on too. Oh those were the days. :) I love horses..really...had to be on one as often as I could when I was younger. I wish I had more photos of me on one. I just have one of me just sitting up on the back of a young Palamino colored girl, bare back, just walking around the pen.
