Utah!

The only thing is Legbars are autosexing, so straight run does not make sense if they could sell them as pullets----SBELS would have puffy cheeks, (once in awhile they hatch w/o them but not usually). They would be white or white with flecks. I can't figure out what they would be with no poofy cheeks and legbar coloring...maybe they are a cross between a leghorn and cream legbar? like the SBELS are Leghorn/Ameraucana crosses? I wonder if privet was contacted if they would spill the beans lol! Can't wait to see them Elk, I hope they all live and do well, you will have to let us know how they lay!

Between getting back in town, a funeral today, a new foster cat and chicks....I haven't had a chance to photo. However, we had some time we had to kill in SL so we went back to IFA. I had been charged $5.49 for the blue egg chicks, but the sign was $3.69. I had a chance to talk with the guy and he said this was a "one-time deal". That they are part Americana and "something else", "they are very expenseive chicks and the hatchery had someone back out on their order". They normally "cull" the chicks but offered him a SR price if he would take them.

He said that "Blue Eggers" will be their new name when they put them out for shipment. I will try to get photos tomorrow.

It's SO frustrating as there were only two chicks left in one brooder, both with MAJOR pasty butt (never cleaned). I hope someone took them home and helped them. More dead/dying chicks today, broke my heart. They treat newborn chicks like product, it's disgusting but big business. :(

Hello! We are new to Utah, moved to Logan last August and are brand new to chickens. We brought 8 little fluff balls home from the IFA in North Ogden a couple days ago - 2 Ameraucanas, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Gold Laced Wyandotte, 1 Cuckoo Marans, and 1 Welsummer. All are doing awesome and we're so excited to be a crazy chicken family. :) We are currently on the hunt for a coop to accommodate our lil ladies. We've checked IFA and CAL Ranch but don't want to pay that much for a coop that probably won't last that long. Also found a beautiful coop at Down Home but it was $700 or $800 and we don't have that much to spend. Any other suggestions besides the classifieds which I've also been trying to keep an eye on? Any great DIY coop plans that won't break the bank to build? And what predators will we be dealing with? We live on the east side of Logan between USU and the mountains. Thanks! :)

Hi, I'm looking for a few Black or Chocolate English Orpington Hens Large Fowl. Does anyone know where I can get maybe 3? Also, willing to trade a purebred Chocolate English Orpington (Large Bantam), cockerel who is gorgeous so far, 4 months old and just starting to crow. I live in Cache Valley. Anyone near by maybe??

Thanks!

hello!Glad you found us!!! Welcome!!! (I was the one from the Facebook page.) Check out the coops here on BYC. You can get some good ideas there. I have built 3 coops. Each cost about $200-250.

welcome to utah and the forum :) i would build your own coop, its much cheaper and depending on how good you are at building things it would surely be made much better. plus you can build it to fit your needs better. you will find lots of ideas for coops on this site and people here can give you ideas too.

Welcome, iPick! You are going to love the chicken world (and probably Utah ;)) Chickens are so fun when you raise them by hand and get to know them.

In other news, I now have ten more Icelandic eggs collected. I'm trying to figure out if I should just stick them in the fridge and start collecting again after my current hatch batch, or if I should put them in the bator now..... Thoughts, experienced hatchers? They would be six days apart from the current eggs.

Welcome iPick, Red keep after them thar Viking eggs… winter came back somewhat yesterday. Been a nice few weeks and I for one will not complain. It would seem that we are building a strong contingency of bird keepers in Cache Valley. Took a drive yesterday to Malad City, Idaho and then west to Holbrook, Idaho and from there south to Snowville, Utah and back to the lovely Cache Valley. We like to go to the little out of the way places along the way, to check out the free range chickens in Plymouth, Utah and Portage, Idaho and as noted above. It is a nice drive, and fun to see what folks keep in their back yard flocks.

Also we are able to make great photographic finds… I will try to get a few to share here later in the day.

I rode a short bus like this for years.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ
