For: Phoenix, hope her bum grows back too. It was like that all last winter and she did ok. I kept thinking if she would only moult then they would grow back. Maybe in the fall...the one feather still there? It looks ridiculous like that huh! poor girl. I have some more feather pulling going on, it makes me crazy, it is not the space, they have plenty now...I just cannot catch whoever it is in action. I need to send another girl packing I am afraid. It was great until about three weeks ago...i have found three girls missing lots of tail feathers and two have even bled. Grrrr
and
Nope the feather is gone. You sure it was HenRee who was doing the tail pulling? She has been an angel here.
I can't remember if I posted this but I got a bunch of older chicks that someone ordered and never picked up (or paid for). They were 3 wks old, missing all head feathers from rubbing on the top of brooder box and no one had tail feathers, I'm sure pecked off from boredom. These girls have never grown back. So I purchased some hen saddles and so far it's working great! I picked wild crazy patterns (vs the cute stuff) hoping it might confuse any predators for when they free range. Like today, isn't it BEAUTIFUL?!! Yeah!!!
Anyway, good luck with your hens. I remember seeing a pattern to make your own somewhere on the net (possibly even this board). But mine were only $5 w/free shipping and nice quality.
BTW, I am not getting notices of posts (even responding to my own) so I bookedmarked this forum but it's moving so fast I'm not catching all posts.
Cynthia, I saw a post in regards to you having a very recent hard hatch and tried to find your op, but couldn't. So wishing you, Red and all the others hatching the best of luck!
Oh oh oh... sorry one more thing. Between my girls gone wild (on egg laying) and Easter (no one bought) I had a TON of extra eggs. I think us and the dogs are egg'd out so I made a huge batch of scrambled eggs, added some green food dye, mixed with scratch after cooked, and smashed it all into a couple icre cream pails and put in the freezer. I figured this was cheaper than flock block for when the weather gets hot! So just a thought for those with extra eggs and need cheap chicken entertainment. Oh, I also sprayed the pails with cooking spray to help them slide out easy.
There's my book, the end.
