Vacation?

The coop size is fine for nights. If they are cooped up in it too much though, it won't be enough space. For half the birds? Better, yes, but as others have said, it will get too hot in most parts of this country at that time of year. Most chickens are actually more cold hardy than heat hardy. In summer they sit around in the shade panting a lot. I freeze a 1-gallon milk container that is mostly full of water, until it is solid ice. Then early afternoon I take it out of the freezer, put the whole container in their water bowl, and that provides them with cool water for the rest of the day. I had to take an out of town trip last summer that was not even an overnight - just a day trip - and I was concerned enough about them I asked my neighbor to come up the street, take the frozen container out of the freezer and add it to the water for them ('course it was going to be 105 that day but even so....)

The other thing is that even if it weren't the heat, chickens go through a LOT of water. You'll be surprised how much. I guess it takes a lot of water to make all those egg whites. For that number of chickens, for that period of time you would want to have a pretty fail safe method of ensuring they don't run out of water. Honestly, I would try to set up auto feeder/waterer in addition to having someone come check on them daily. The less that person has to do, the better. Do you have a neighbor who could come let them out in the morning and lock the coop door after dark for you, in return for any eggs that are deposited in the nest boxes during the day?

Oh, one other thing. The person I got my chicken coop from several years ago, gave up keeping chickens after a summer incident. One day she forgot to open the coop door in the morning. They were all dead by evening from the heat. I still cringe every time I think of that because it seems to me to be an awful way to go.

Ok - Hope I can get someone to 'chicken-sit'. I will also try to monitor daytime coop temps before I leave - what exact temp is too hot?

Thanks
Ryan

We just got back from 5 days in Vegas. A co-worker of DW who lives nearby agreed to chicken-sit for us in exchange for the eggs she collected. Now she and her DH are planning to get chickens of their own.

Do you know any other chicken owners in your area? I've agreed to chicken-sit this summer for one of my co-workers who lives near the office. Maybe you could advertize for a chicken-sitter at your local feed store.

You guys have to remember this person is near SEATTLE, not the mid-west, NY, or any other place in the country. I grew up there. The summers - you're LUCKY to get a week of 75 degrees. 80 is a 1 or 2 day event. Seriously. I'd say the temps during peak of summer will be about 70-75 at the most with a little rain in the evenings.

And, I still don't see an issue with the sq. footage. 120 sq ft for 25 birds? Sounds a lot more reasonable than many people's coops, and in the MILD weather they get, those chickens are actually very lucky with their coop size. However, I do think an attached predator-proof run would be very nice to give them

I am confused. 10x 12 is 120 sq ft. Divided by 4 sq ft per bird, she would be able to have 30 birds in there. She has 25? Did I miss something?

I agree I would have someone check on the daily. Is there a teen or someone is say 4h that you could pay a little bit to come care for the chickens?

I think the size issue is because the OP is talking about leaving them in it for a full 2 weeks. Don't forget, the coop size is generally 4 sq feet for coop and 10 sq feet of run space per bird. Since the OP usually free ranges, the coop size is great. But if they are in it for 2 weeks without getting that outdoor time, they are getting far less than the 10 sq feet each that they need during the day. That is why people are saying it is too small. However don't forget the OP also said he plans to butcher half of them before he leaves, so he is really talking about 12-13 birds in 120 sq feet which is not nearly as bad.
