Vacuum Cleaner Ratings wanted PLEASE!

I have 2 vacs. One is a rainbow I've had for 25 years. It's on it's 2nd motor!

It does a great job.

I also have a good Panasonic vac that has a HEPA filter on it. I can also stop the round roller brush from turning when I'm using the attachments. That way I'm not turning up dust when using the hose. I love it. But the dang thing cost like $400.00 about 10 years ago so I don't know what it is now.

I had a Kirby for years and it finally died. Then I went through several Hoovers and then a Rainbow (which was a big hassle to me) and then a Dyson but just recently went back to Kirby. Can't beat it for getting up anything!

Dyson does have a belt to it, trust me on that one. When we went to buy one, the Sears saleman told us it did not but it does. We used to go through a vacuum a year and I bought the Dyson 6 years ago and it is still running strong.

As far as maintenance goes, I replace the washable filters after I cannot see through them anymore even after cleaning (14.99 online) and have replaced the other filter once (under the canister- not supposed to have to replace I think)
If you suck up wads of hair mats, there is a chance they can get stuck up around the belt and wheel and it will make a horrendous grinding sound so you cannot use it, but hubby has managed to drill a hole into the Dyson to make it easier to take apart to get the wad out. We have had to do that only twice and I have a very old matted cat, 2 other cats, 2 heavily furred dogs, a very small house (900sq ft) and I have long hair.

The other thing I always had a problem with with other vacuums is when I would vacuum, I would get shocked if I was not wearing shoes, that was due to the vacuum hose coming up along the back and the shock was from static electricity because we are so dry here. I never get shocked anymore with the Dyson.

Oh, and I bought the hard floor tool on Ebay for my tile floors and it works amazing too! I never even have to sweep!

I have also had a dyson upright for years and I am very happy with it. The only time it ever had a problem was after DH vacuumed a room that was full of fine drywall dust (after the walls had been taped and sanded) -- I think the dust was too small and clogged the filter. We looked up online how to take it apart and clean it all out, and it's worked great ever since. It works fine on both long pile carpets and short wool throw rugs, although sometimes it takes a few minutes to self-adjust. I have not had to replace a belt yet (but I'm not a heavy user, since about half my house is hardwood and I use the swiffer more than the vacuum on that). I also find it pretty easy to use, easy to empty, etc. Hope this helps!

Buy a central vacuum system. There is nothing better in the world!!!!

I've had central vacs in every house I've ever lived in. They are not that hard to install and really not too expensive when you start comparing them to these dyson machines.

All you'll have to handle is a hose. It exhausts directly outside and will pickup everything.

I Love Love Love my Kenmore Progressive canister vac! It has this groovy little apholstery attachment that ROCKS for cleaning fishy crackers out of my van. The telescoping wand makes cobweb hunting easy! I also live near the river and the soil is very sandy. This bad boy sucks it all right up! Love my Kenmore!!
