Too late to join? I thought I wouldn't have any hatching until tomorrow but, I have one early bird out of the shell already. It was one of the dark blue shells I couldn't see any movement in before lock-down. lol

My first gen OE chicks are hatching out and now I'm starting to realize that I am in trouble. The OE chicks look like my BCM chicks that should start hatching at any time. Whats the best way to mark chicks if you don't have leg bands?

Toe punch or if u don't have one a small pair of scissors and slit the webbing between 2 toes. Do the same one on each chick and you'll always be able to tell.

They should have lighter fuzz on their bottoms. You can paint a spot on there with food coloring. I did that with my olive eggers using blue food coloring and it lasted about 3 weeks and I had to put more on. They looked just like my australorps so the food coloring definitely helped!

Two chicks hatched and about 15 more pipped. Nothing yet from the legbar eggs, which is disappointing but not surprising. I have an Ameraucana that is about ready to jump out of the shell!

I put the two chicks in the brooder since they were almost dry and laying on top of the other eggs. The red spot on the darker chick is food coloring. The mom to that one is a white plymouth rock, so I'm surprised at how dark it is. I assumed they'd hatch yellow and I'd be able to tell them apart. Not! LOL

Is the toe punch permanent? That may be favorable for marking my BCMs.

my 2 day early pip seems weak- didnt peep back so i opened the shell up a bit to allow more oxygen in, hours later it is at least peeping sometimes if i peep at it. i also rubbed a little vitmin oil into the exposed membrane. does any one else out there use either ascorbic acid dip/spray or vitamin e on their eggs to improve hatchability??
