Because I am now having to insist that my City ( El Cerrito, CA) expand its chicken ordinances, I have been researching online and elsewhere to make sure the important information is accessible.

Here's a good academic research paper prepared in support:

Here's a New York newspaper article:

Here's an article from the Worldwatch Institute: http://www.worldwatch.org/node/5900

Here's
a San Francisco Chronicle article: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2008/06/27/carollloyd.DTL

Here's
info from our dear California Governator's website on food production/transportation in regard to sustainable living:

Buy local produce and support local farmers markets. Processed food in the United States travels more than 1,300 miles on average to reach consumers and produce travels more than 1,500 miles from the industrial farm to the plate.
It’s up to you!

Buy fresh food, not frozen (90% less energy).
It’s up to you!

Buy organic foods as much as possible. Organic soils capture and store carbon dioxide at much higher levels than soils from conventional farms. If we grew all of our corn and soybeans organically, we’d remove 580 billion pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
It’s up to you!

Eat less meat or none at all. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together - plus bring a whole host of other resource, chemical, pollution, disease and cruelty issues.

This is your first post, congrats!

I just did an article on owning chickens, esp. in this economy. Got to Jacksonville.com and type in Chickens at the top

Great information and post! We really hope everyone posts their experiences (good and bad) when working with local cities and officials. This is how we'll all learn and grow and educate together!

I am successful in garnering enthusiasm among City officials for changing the Ordinance. They are gung-ho and as excited as I am to proceed with backyard chickens. We're even thinking about including a city sponsorship in promoting and providing chicks and hens at the annual 4th of July Celebration put on by the City.
