Vegans of BYC!!

Thing is, some vegans would go nuts over something as small as this, eating your own hens eggs. As much as they want to believe it's wrong, I just don't believe my girls could care less, lol. That's why I let other people eat the eggs.
Same with sheep, like, if I rescued or kept sheep as pets (yes I would totally do that because sheep are awesome 🤣), depending on breed I would have to cut the wool. So, if I used that wool, would that make me exploiting and harming them? I don't think so. If I bred them for the wool and sold it, and then killed the sheep, I would see that as exploitation. But having an animal purely because you love em, and using whatever you can that they produce, I'm starting to see that this isn't exploitation.
You have a much more balanced view than a lot of vegans. Sheep need haircuts ( Unless you have hair sheep… I have a few of them!) And chickens are always going to lay eggs. Why waste these good things?

Whenever I say I'm vegan, I feel like I'm not being entirely honest because I eat eggs -- a lot of eggs because I have chickens, ducks and geese. So, veggan is more appropriate, but if anyone asks, it's easier to go with "vegan." It's even easier not to explain at all because I live in the middle of farm country, where it's practically un-American not to eat meat and I'm quite tired of the nutritional lectures. Especially from people who don't appear to know much about nutrition.

And, while I don't love the taste of many honeys, I don't feel terribly guilty eating things made with honey that was "stolen" from beehives.

My sheep are Katahdins, hair sheep that "shed" -- well. actually rub off -- their own "wool" in the spring. They are purely pets who keep weeds from overtaking the pasture. I think they (and the miniature goats) may be exploiting me 🤣. They eat a lot of expensive hay over the winter and force me into the cold to haul water into their houses.

@Callender Girl would you be willing to share your mushroom soup recipe? I haven't made a creamed mushroom soup before and would love to try.

The problem with making soup for me is that it usually makes SOOOOOO much food. My kids will typically eat a bowl maybe one for leftovers, my DH is not vegan and is one that 'needs' meat at each meal (I just shake my head) so then I end up with pint jars in the freezer or eating soup for every meal for a week, which can get so old.

Thank you! I try. I do have strong views on a lot of things but I also see a lot of vegans, especially on social media, are very extreme and often don't know about the animals they are trying to protect. I definitely don't want to be like that lol. That makes me question things like this. Like you say, sheep are going to produce wool, unless they are a breed that can shed, and that wool could even clothe and warm people who are in need. Like, if you didnt want to use it yourself, or sell it, donate it!

Exactly. I watch a lot of vegan content… I'm not just making it up when I say you have a more balanced view. Like you say, a lot of them are very extreme.

This will be me, I think! It makes the most sense honestly.

I want sheep!!! The agricultural college I went to used to have this little petting farm on sight, with the sweetest sheep on! They were gorgeous.

also, as I mentioned, I'm sure in moderation it would be okay, but I do see it as another good reason why a largely or fully plant based diet is healthier for us. As long as you ensure all the vitamins and nutrients are recieved, you can be equally (if not more) healthy!
That's where I stand on it, but again, my main reason for being vegan is more to do with animal welfare than anything else
So it’s better to get your vitamins from a tablet than a well balanced diet including all food groups? Why is that? I’m not trying to argue, I’m curious is all.

I believe everyone should take supplements regardless of their diet, to be honest. I think its the best way to avoid deficiencies, deficiencies that both vegans and non vegans are able to obtain. And commercial meat is pumped full of these nutrients, and you could argue that a lot of what you get is second hand, all I'm doing is taking my nutrients directly through a different form.

I will say though, that I believe these supplements are  part of the plant based diet, not separate from it, but included. After all, they're just extracted, condensed nutrients taken from the plants we eat and need! Nothing wrong with doing that.
