I agree. I think that kids should be entitled to as much education as their parents could afford. I am sorry if somebody grew up poor and uneducated, unable to better themselves living in the projects or a farm in the middle of nowhere. Maybe their parents shouldn't have kids until they can do something for themselves, or to better their lives and education.........

Too many people think giving birth to children is their right..... well take some responsibility when you have those children, and prep them for school properly and make sure you are capable to teach them from 0-6 till professional teachers can help take over.

I love my kids, and I take in foster kids as well. I see all the time folks who "wanted" kids but never deserved them or could care for them properly.

There are so many points of view aren't there? I've mentioned before I have nothing against home schooling, I home schooled my son and he's a pretty darn good kid thank you. I home schooled him because of the teacher he had in 3rd grade, she didn't understand his advanced thinking and actually sent a note home to me asking me to tell him to speak in a manner the other students would understand. I said no, educate your students. She knew I was a teacher also, I was teaching high school at that time. We've got teachers at our school that have no business being in a a classroom, they know their subject well, but not how to teach it.

From the emails and PMs that flooded me while I went to lunch I know most people support teachers in one way or another. All I'm asking here is if you must say something bad about one teacher, then please say something good about another.

One person said it's 50/50 good and bad, no it isn't. There is a much higher percent of very good teachers out there than there is the bad ones. I have memories of a teacher in high school that just hated me because I was white, white to him anyway, he didn't know I'm half Cherokee. He spent his days running down anglos, and in this area it's allowed, and it still is, it's very racist here. I've dealt with parents whose children do no work, turn in no assignments, the parents don't answer the phone or notes, but then they go to my administration and say I'm failing their child because I'm a racist white B*&$h.

I sat down and totaled my expenses from last year, I spent over $5000 dollars on my classroom. Part of that was 7 students who had no supplies the entire year and were trying to bum off of other students who couldn't afford to give away their supplies.

5 packs of paper per student @ .50 ea x 7 = $17.50
5 3 prong pocket folders for 7 .50 x 5 x 7 = $17.50
Approx. 30 pencils ea for 7 .15 x 30 x 7 = $31.50
Pens 5 ea 5 x .25. x 7 = $ 8,75
3 ring binders 3.00 x 7 $ 21.00
erasers 1.00 x 7 $ 7.00

This is a partial list for just 7 students, they go through a lot of supplies. I've had parents actually tell me that they know I have extra stuff,, and they can't afford to buy so they know I'll give to the kids. I also have to supply my own son, his clarinet reeds alone break the bank anymore, but I would never expect his music teacher to supply them.

This is not home school VS Public School, this is about respecting the people who spend more time with your kids than you do most days.

Teachers are held to a higher standard, and so many of them do not come up to it. I think the bashing is because of frustration. There are a lot of good teachers out there and there are a lot who should not be allowed anywhere NEAR a classroom. Like my fifth grade teacher who beat me with a ruler because I could not fix the roller on a windowshade. I have friends who are teachers and they could tell you things that would curl your hair. Like the high school home ec teacher who sipped "coffee" all through her afternoon classes. The coffee was at least 50% whiskey and everyone knew it. Students and fellow teachers alike. She was eventually fired but it took several years to do it. I had some great teachers, too and I remember them fondly.

My favorite teacher story:

Mrs. Alexander in the 3rd grade who understood and me and let me tutor other kids when I was finished instead of making me sit and stare at the wall.

Mrs. Mason during the 3 years of high school. She was my journalism teacher, my English teacher for 3 years, she had the AP classes, and she was my mentor. She took the time to sit down with me and go over assignments in-depth, so I would know exactly what was expected of me. She also is the one who discovered I was dyslexic. She also worked me with and found out if I coud have a table tall enough to stand at to work I would do better than if I tried to sit down, I still can't sit down to do my work and I've discovered among my 6th graders several like that.

Mr. King my high school band director. He directed me in JV, Varsity, Marching, Concert and Stage Bands. He found out I could memorize my music and play better if I didn't have a music stand in front of me with music on it. I would get lost if I tried to follow the page after I knew the music.

Mr. Kollar, my high school history teacher. He was a hippy who taugh the history of the US and World History through rock and roll. He could equate any time in history to something musical.

Mrs. Mason and Mr. King saw me through the murder of 3 family members. They stayed with me at all times, they let me sit in their classrooms to be away from crowds, when I broke down they were in the nurses office with me even if it meant having a sub in their own classrooms. They loved me, they understood me, they took care of me, they let me be me and they supported me. If I could ever be half the humans they were, let alone the teachers, I would be honored.

The only problem I have with some teachers is when they try to push their politics on the kids they teach. Other then that most are real good.

There's one other rant that I have with disrespect towards teachers...I am not trying to hijack...I was wondering if other teachers feel there's a double-standard?

Teachers are not perfect. I am teaching kids who are in some cases raised by women who "dance" or "do tricks." I am teaching kids that smell like marijuana. I am teaching kids that haven't been fed in 2 days. I am also teaching kids who get a $40,000 car on their 17th birthday and were put on the pill on their 13th birthday, get ratfaced at "hoedowns" in some farmer's field...doing whatever they wish.

I have chosen to supplement my income with photography. I live out of wedlock with my boyfriend. I go to bars and buy 6-packs at Walmart. I zip my big-motor car around town safely having fun. I curse. I wear tight jeans, short skirts, strapless tops outside of school.

At what point did I sign up to be a nun? I am constantly lectured and pick up an attitude from teacher forums that this is unacceptable that I just go about my business outside of school. I am a young 25, and I have a lot of life to live. My coworkers have even said "Oh no no no, don't let them see you having a beer at the local festival!" Umm...unlike my darlings, I am LEGAL. I am a responsible adult. I am not your child's babysitter. I am not a nun. I am still a decent person. I can still care about your child and teach your child and give them a safe place in the classroom.

It's like I feel like on top of getting manure heaped on me by hyper-critical society, I cannot even enjoy my life outside of class. At what point is enough ENOUGH? For such a critical job, I cannot help but feel like we are at the bottom of a caste, ready to have the fingers pointed at us. I am sorry if I sound like a martyr, I am just aggravated with the double-standard towards teachers.

Mrs. Price, who gave me a school dictionary because she figured I needed it more than the school did. I still can't spell!
Mr. Morgan, the best math teacher ever, who's favorite explicative was "Good Gauss"

Mr. Henderson, highschool biology and chemistry
Mr. Dennis, high school physics
Professor Hung, my college Japanese and Chinese History professor, because he loved his subject and made everyone else passionate about it. The first time I loved history!

Because I slept poorly, I'm forgeting peoples names....I hate that!
