LOL thanks...believe me, my personal life does NOT come in the classroom though...I am a professional when I am with my students.

My 1st grade teacher was in a Heineken bar shoot. I went to Catholic school. No one batted an eye. She was still one of the most awesome teachers I had ever had. Everyone loved her!

Writer rant all you want to.

I am guilty of having very little faith in the majority of teachers today because the good teachers are disappearing and being laid off prior to retirement so governments can avoid paying retirement. This happens and we (parents) are stuck with sub-standard teachers in far too many cases.

I think teachers are one of the most least respected professionals deserving of more than they get. But I also think there are too many unqualified teachers in our schools and who are there solely because they can be hired for less wages. And worse thing about that...the teachers that are there just do not care.

Not to mention the fact that the teachers have had their power in the classroom stripped away. They cannot concentrate on keeping teh children in line and focused on a task because they cannot injure a child's feelings, spanking is crime now days and they cannot punish unruly students without wasting time that could otherwise be spent teaching, to deal with avoiding all the barriers and jumping through all the hoops the system now has in place.

When i was in school..if you stepped out of line you were warned once. the next time, you were taken from your seat and paddled in front of the classroom. Ya know what? You got a clue and straightened your butt up. Now students must be coddled and "talked" into good behavior and focus on a task.

I blame the system...not the teachers. That is why I homeschooled for 5 years.

This is a very interesting topic. I have to totally agree with WoW that lately I've read alot of posts from homeschoolers that come off as better than tho because they homeschool. On the other hand of all the teachers here WoW is the one who has consistently complained the most about being a teacher whether it's the pay, the bad manners, the rotten parents, etc. Oh and the internet isn't a term paper so if occasionally I type in a short cut that doesn't mean I'm dumb.

There are good teachers and there are bad teachers. Until the day comes that the bad teachers can't keep their jobs due to tenor, seniority, or the union it will be that way and we parents will be vocal about it. I have a pretty good relationship with my kids teachers. When I do have to talk to them about a problem I always tell them that one bad call a year means the rest of the year they did a great job.

I don't think it's so much as allowing the teachers to discipline as much as it is that a lot of parents expect the teachers to do the disciplining that they themselves don't do. We didn't talk back to adults, that was taught at home. I worked at walmart for a short time to get out of the house and I can't tell you how many kids tell their parents to shut up, my mother would have given me a fat lip! So now these teachers have to put up with non-disciplined children that they can't hurt their feelings. Something else people have to realize is that qualification requirements differ by locale. What is required here is NOT required in North Carolina. The standard was very low when we lived there.

I'm referred to as "The Crazy Lady with the Dog" I have been cussed out before breakfast, assaulted before lunch, and hospitalized before the end of the school. I've been to the funeral of more of my students than I have my elder family members! I've been in the middle of a fight with razor blades. Held the hand of one of the girls that started having her baby in the bathroom.

Being "The Crazy Lady" that I am, I come back to it everyday because, I am a teacher.

Teachers make VERY GOOD money where I live. According to their Union website, average $50-60,000 per year.
There seems to have been a shift (since I was a kid) from the desire to teach, to a desire to make allot of money out-weighing the desire to teach.
At times I think it can be a thankless profession.
I would say only a few and far between don't deserve the amount of respect they get, otherwise it is a respected profession.
But some of the general public get annoyed when the Teachers go on strike for more money, benefits, etc..
That being said I wouldn't switch places with them in a heartbeat!

I think people get into teaching and have great ideas and then meet the administration who tells the who what when and where. My kids (and I) have had their fair share of both very bad and very good teachers at both parochial and public schools (one parochial teacher told her clasroom of 4th and 5th graders she wanted to hang all of them). What bothers me is the lengthy process of getting rid of the bad teachers once they are tenured into the district. The former band teacher at the public school was well known for being verbally abusive and for sleeping with his select female students; but this was 'ok' with the community since the band was so great...... to get rid of this guy the reduced his hours to part time so he would quit. And double standard? I have no problem with teachers going out and having a good time and letting their hair down, people need to vent and blow off some steam. I do have a problem with a teacher who is coaching a young girls basketball team and letting everyone in the bleachers view her thong underwear from the bench.

As far as expenses go, our district has all the parents purchase multiples of school supplies, then they dump everything together so the kids who do not have supplies do get them and the teacher is not the one purchasing extra supplies (I get annoyed with this since I do not have a lot of extra $ myself to be spending on supplies, and the school supplies I end up getting cost me 4-5 hundred a year....) I am not saying that this should be the teacher's expense, but something that should be included in the school budget (and I would be more than happy to pay for school supplies with my taxes than the gazillion sports programs).

I have a child with a learning disability that the school chooses to 'ignore' rather than help her, so right at the moment I do not have a very good opinion on teachers or schools in general. I have friends who are teachers and it had been suggested to me that I become one. Frankly I do not have the patience to deal with a bunch of kids who have no interest in what I have to say, and I have no interest in dealing with all of the politics. The summers and holidays off would be a bonus, but not enough of a temptation for me.

And I'll rant about the auto union too anytime!!!!

I'll have to go back and find all those complaints. I also have never said a word about the Internet being a term paper, using shortcuts, or calling you dumb. My comment on grammar, spelling, structure, etc. was aimed at those who are publicly flogging teachers but in the process making themselves look very ignorant. Maybe they should have paid a little closer attention in class?
I have never complained about being a teacher, I love to teach. Yes I have complained about rudeness, I don't feel that just because I'm a teacher I should have to put up with rudeness. Yes, I've complained about rotten parents, but I've never said ALL parents are rotten, so why does everyone else get to say ALL teachers are rotten?
You are entitled to your low opinion of me, hopefully one of your teachers taught you which amendment protects your right to say it.

By the way, yes I've also complained about the pay, I teach in NM and we don't get paid much and it doesn't go far when I have to pay for the supplies for the kids of the rotten parents.
