Ventilation questions?????

As you can all see now we have decided to go a different direction (thanks to all of your advice). We took out the floor and the single nesting box. You can see how tall the coop is with me next to it I am about 6 ft tall.

We also decided to use two nesting boxes and move them down to the lowest level we could. you can see the holes we cut to place the boxes over.

We are going to use harware cloth around the base and put their food down there, we thisnk this will give them more space in the copp itself. It will be about 75 total cubic feet plus what the roof angle allows.

Not enough space. They could fight a lot in a tight space. You could add a ridge vent along top. Has to have soffit ventilation too for it to work. Heat will kill them surer than cold most times. Poor ventilation will make them sick too. Some ventilation needed in wintertime. Make a bump-out along one or both sides for nest boxes to conserve floor space. Maybe a shed-type addition off of the back side to booOld saying is "the healthiest chickens are found in the sorriest coops." So that seems to emphasize ventilation.

We have changed a lot of things. We have decided to use the entire structure as coop space, we will use hardware cloth to surround the floor level. And this is what we have done.

Above you can also see the opening with a ladder to the gound level.
We put two roosts on the inside to maximize the space.

We also added two nest boxes on the outside of the coop and made an easy access door to them.

We are going to use the entire roof gable for ventilation in the summer time. My wife made the door let her know how great it is.

In regard to your heat concerns, if they have shade and lots of fresh water (i put ice in mine during the summer), they will do well. Orpingtons are harty birds. Mine found a place under the edge of the woods where some trees had fallen, and they made that their summer afternoon cool off/napping area. They dust bathed and rested, and they would re-emerge after the sun let up a bit.
