Thanks @RareAvis. The longer you have chickens, the more you try to steel yourself against these losses. I'm hopeless though, they're pets to me and each loss does hurt.

So how is Sadie- or, maybe Sam or Sean now? :)

I live in fear of hawks.

I love them, too.

But here? They're everywhere. I 'lost' Sadie once and once only, outside. I was SO scared. I absolutely thought: Hawk.

I'd run in for two minutes, literally: run in, right back out. This was FOR Sadie, too: I was bringing the cat indoors. I'd left him happily worming near plenty of brush, and I FREAKED. Couldn't find him. The panic? Unbelievable.

I love raptors and hawks, too. Love.

Just? DON'T eat my family, if you please.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss...

@Pyxis were did you get yours from? It would be awesome to get some eggs from you come spring, are they pure? Or do they have white toes or off colored beaks? Either way would be cool to hatch some! If you could give me a price estimate for +6 eggs that would be great.

Mine are from GFF and TMA lines originally. I've had them for three-ish years now so at this point I consider them my own line. They are pure, but that does not mean that they will hatch all black. There are still chicks that hatch with white toes and toenails, or clear toenails (which darken as they age). I do not breed from these and cull them from my flock. This is something that happens in every breeder's birds at this time. The good ones cull them. The ones that are only in it from the money just keep them and use them to churn out more birds to try to turn a profit.

Also feather stubs have cropped up in this breed recently. A lot of breeders are battling with them. I cull those too when I get them. Didn't have them until I started using new roosters this year but those were culled from the flock and replaced with this boy so I'm hoping the feather stubs will leave with them. I have a hatch this Friday of eggs that are hopefully pure (the girls were free ranging with the other birds about two weeks before they were laid so I can't be sure they're pure) and if they are pure they should give me a good idea of what I can expect to see next year from my chicks.

Sorry for the novel, I'm pretty passionate about these guys :) If you want some eggs shoot me a pm and we can set something up. The eggs are $12 each.

I read recently about white toenails and off colored beaks, it happens. From the pictures of your birds I've seen they look perfect. A lot of people are selling Ayam Cemani's from corrupt lines and listing them as purebred. I will pm you when the time comes, glad to know someone in my state is selling them!

Thanks! Yes, lots of people trying to sell them to make money and with no regard for the breed or helping it improve :(

Hi everyone, I currently live in MA but we bought land near Putney VT and will be moving there within the next year or 2. We bought over 20 acres so I'll have lots of space to build coops and have tons of chickens
