Last night I noticed one of my girls was very messy in her back end area. My husband and I brought her in for a warm soak and set up the ER brooder. We managed to get a good amount of poop cleaned off of her but noticed a sizable prolapse (like 1-2 inches out of her vent) Not all of the skin is bright red. There's a piece that looks like it's black and after the soaking just wouldn't come off. When I checked on her this morning, she has crusted up a bit again... although she's still able to poop. There's some white stuff dripping out too. We've put PreH on her last night and this morning. Vitamins in her water, heat lamp and oyster shells in her brooder. She's in good spirits (not lethargic) I haven't noticed a difference from last night to this morning and that black crusty area is making me think we may not have caught this soon enough. Without a picture, what do you guys think??? I can try to get a pic later if that helps but it's pretty nasty.

Sorry you haven't gotten an answer. Probably no one had anything to offer that would help her; I don't. You're right that the black spot may not be a good sign. Hard to say, though, whether it is a scab or necrotic tissue.

I think I'd just keep doing what you are doing and see how things develop. I wish you both well.

Thanks Dawn!

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. DH actually thinks she's looking a little better/smaller than yesterday. This is after her second warm soaking and 2nd PrepH treatment. She's still eating, drinking and pooping. The black definitely looks like a scab, now that you mention it. That makes me feel a little better about it. We tried pushing it back inside and it immediately comes out and it seems to be causing her pain when we do this. I guess we'll wait to see what tomorrow brings and maybe it'll be smaller then and pushing it back inside will work???

I have experince with that.

Ok lets get down to buisness.

Its not to late, Thats how my girl looked, and she survived and is back to normal.

You need to get the light off her ASAP. That light will keep her laying eggs causing eggbound.

you need to keep her in the dark, and keep pushing that back in her ( she will keep pushing it out) but just push it in when you have the time.

Warm baths are good everyday for 30 mins, is what I did (make sure the warm water is on her vent) and I keep doing that, and my hen was showing improvement within 1 week. and was back to normal in a week and a half about.

once shes back to normal, keep her in the dark for atleast another week, so she doent start laying right away becaue her egg system needs to rest.

keep me updated.

Thanks for the advice and great thread. How many times a day did you try to push the prolapse back in? And how long before it actually stayed in? Gaby (the chicken) is in our pitch dark basement with a red heat lamp, food, water and oyster shells. I just gave her some scrambled egg and she gobbled that right up! Sounds like she's gonna have a long road to recovery, but, as of right now, I'm hopeful! I'll keep you posted with updates.

it was 6-7 s until is stayed in. When I started to give my hen 30 min baths (on the 4th day I did this) and in the warm water I would push it in and it would stay in on the 5th day or so.

I pushed it in about 3 times a day

OK... that's good to know. We've only been treating for less than 24 hours and have only tried pushing it back in twice. We'll try again before bed and see how Gaby does

Prep H and confinement in the house had my hen's prolapse completely reversed within 24 hours. (Admittedly, I did catch it early.) (And she hasn't missed a day of laying despite my efforts to stop her - dark and frigid temps. This girl is a laying machine so I'm sure I'll be dealing with prolapses from her again ....)

Tonight I gave Gaby another warm soaking bath. She seemed to enjoy it as much as a chicken likes being wet. But she tolerated it. I whipped together a sugar/water mixture as it has come highly recommended by y'all. I'm telling you.... IT WORKS!!!!!!! We slathered her up and gently pushed her prolapse in and VIOLA!!!!! It did pop back out after the first attempt but it's been in for almost an hour now. After her bath, we put her back in her ER brooder and she preened and preened. She was still preening when I left her but I checked her vent before leaving and she's still IN!!! Keep your fingers crossed that she stays in tonight and we're over the hump.

Thanks for the great advice. I'll keep ya posted.
