Very dissapointing

I have hatched porous eggs with no problems. But I think everybody is having problems. I had two batches of eggs arrive from two different breeders on the same day, during the cold spell. ALL the eggs did not develop and both breeders are dependable. It is clear that the PO let them sit in a cold and or drafty place overnight and the end result was dead eggs. One of the breeders though is replacing the eggs though I did not ask him too. I think most of the problems seem to be surfacing from the cold snap. It was in the low teens in Greensboro, NC the night before my eggs arrived. Which is where all the packages for my area are sorted to from around the country. I am frustrated as well as others but I will just have to keep on and chalk one up to not to order eggs during extreme cold.

Another reason why selling hatching eggs can be so frustrating at times (no these aren't my eggs). People 'know' what caused the problem even though they know nothing of what might have happened between the seller's house and theirs, and are adamant on blaming the breeder when things don't go exactly how they'd like. 7 out of 15 development on shipped eggs is actually quite reasonable.

Good point Cara, and exactly why I have no desire to be a big time egg seller.

Question about pourous eggs. Is it the use of oyster shell and well balanced feed that prevents the pourousness? Personally the eggs I get from my hens are NOT "holey", but I have tried to hatch some that seem very "holey" and have had mixed results.
So, why do some hens have the pourous and some do not?
Thanks!!

That was a cool diagram!! It does say the shell i s calcium carbinate, so I guess the oyster shell would help with the maintanance of the shell, but like you said, there's ,more to it than that, lol

You know what is very disappointing? People who accuse others on not being honest or trying to work things out.

Clay, you told me in your very first message that the air cells were loose when you candled the first time and that the eggs were porous.

I responded to you and this is my communication to you and your communication back:

Sorry the eggs got tossed around like a football. I always hatch my porous eggs, and don't usually have a problem with them.

Let me know how the rest of the hatch goes and if you want, we'll work something out to get you some more eggs.

Thanks,

I don't want to cause hard feeling here but air cells aside I find it hard to blame the low development rate on rough handling. When 100% of the porous eggs are clear and 100% of the non porous eggs are developing. And I got 12 eggs form peachick the same day and 11 are developing, non have porous shells.

Hoping the remaining 7 continue to develop
Clay

I have not responded to you yet because I didn't know what else to tell you as I have already offerred to make things right and now you just go on the public forum and bash me and I am sure you have PM'd everyone my name.

I AM DISSAPPOINTED.

I've hatched porous eggs with no issues....both my own and shipped.

It would seem to me that P&P tried to work things out with you. 7 eggs developing out of her eggs is not bad for shipped eggs. Buying shipped eggs is a gamble no matter what and either you should be willing to take the risk or not. Once they leave the seller they've got no more control over how they're handled.

I agree. I have hatched porus eggs with no problems. 7 out of 15 eggs developing is pretty good for shipped eggs. Once the eggs leave the sellers hands, they can not be held responsible for fertility, or hatchability, since many things can happen/go wrong during shipping.

This is what gets me about a buyer, I sell hatchings sometimes and its a gamble and I always try to make it right when someone tells "me" the eggs were unfertile or clear when I know that I have 100% fertility here at home hatching out my own birds. I spend out of my pocket to make it right. After they leave my hands its up to the shipping if they make it to your home and your hatching abilities.
