Very unusual chick, Guinea / chicken hybrid!!

I have four guinea fowl. Three males and one female.....go figure. But one set have become a mated pair and the other two males have wondered around the other chicken flock and paired up to a couple hens. They are quiet a pair watching them around my place, such odd couples but seems happy to have someone to care for They speak different languages to be sure, but seem to communicate with each other. And are protective of the their chosen hens. Im sure they are mating but since I have not hatched any eggs I don't know if they will hatch.

I think one of mine turned out to be a guinea hybrid it look a lot like the others but long legs and seem to be going bald on its butt and neck. Is this normal??

We just hatched our first hybrid but it died almost immediately :( I was so hopeful! It was brown with purple wing tips. Had a single comb and the bald bump for his horn. We've got 2 males and 1 female so I'm hopeful the non-dominant male will continue to try his luck with the hens :) I really would like to have one here, even if they are short living!

If you're interested, I think it died because I thought it was a chicken egg (I had 5 duds, lo and behold, 4 duds, 1 hybrid) and had it out of the incubator for quite a while (I was cleaning it up to get ready for the next hatch) before I heard it tweeting through the shell. I put it back in again and it finally pipped but couldn't spin. After 48 hours, I opened the shell for it and it popped out and died. Very sad.

IIRC, the hybrids have no comb at all. I would say if you could see a single comb, it was a chicken not a hybrid.

Also as far as I can remember, all naturally occurring(no AI) hybrids were chicken rooster over a guinea hen. never heard of a confirmed case of the other way around, at least naturally. I've been told once that it was not possible for guinea cock to successfully mate a chicken. AI probably would be the best way for obtaining guinea cock x chicken hen hybrid if this is true.....

I really think it's a hybrid, if it's not it was really really messed up chicken. It wasn't dead at 26 days incubation, the chicken eggs were all done or dead by then. My roo is black and is throwing nothing but black and white chicks, something like 60 chicks hatched in the last few weeks are proof of that. This one was brown (like some of our hens) with both bald bump and comb. It was very odd, different that ones I've seen here, but similar too somehow... maybe why it couldn't live? I'll see if I can upload a pic later. Maybe it was a chick with a brain tumor, but how did it end up brown?

Sorry it didn't make it, but I don't think it's your fault, they're tough and if it was making noise in the shell and still didn't make it to hatching, I wouldn't think it was the cooler time period that was at fault. They can chill to being comatose and still survive, in or out of shell. It was probably some other issue. But, how knows for sure.

The color brown in chickens I've read is sometimes caused by a difference in proteins in skin and feathers, not quite the same as other coloring. Since you have so many other black and whites, perhaps it was a hybrid, but you'll always get that odd one out anyway, the sport or the throwback.

A pic would help for sure.

Best wishes.

My chickens tolerate my guineas and my guineas are scared of my chickens even tho the chickensare all bantam....had to separate them at night to get any sleep with the constant screeching..you mention your babies call like chickens but do they also have the guinea voice too? Whooo thats an earsplitter when they want your attention! Take care
