VERY Vocal Chickens

My 22 week old SILKIES are extremely vocal at times. I have conversations with them. Each one sounds unlike the others. The black ,blue ,lavenders, red (one) do not sound alike each other. When I come in to feed them they start a slow simmer although it is louder actually, then it is a slow boil that escalates to a rolling like heck boil. I get scolded if waterer has pine shavings in it. Keep in mind I clean it out every 2 1/2 hrs when I bring the mob nourishment.First Pele the leader examines before anyone can use it and during the day I get bok.. bok ..bok.. and they continue to tap it with their beaks . At night I get mumbles and chants only a mother could love or a witch perhaps. They settle down to chat umongst themselves but when I come in to check on them , I get the earful ,probably island gossip I miss out on seeing they have me running ragged 24/7!. I have a lavender SILKIE that coos like a dove and now has added a duck like squawk to her complaining rituals. I get numerous sounds out of them depending on what the heck they think they must have....yesterday. I cannot move fast enough to keep up with their nonsense. I would not trade them for anything. Gotta love them!

As a newbie the last thing I expected was that they would have so much to say!

My Gang of 5 is always discussing things from the time I open their coop in the morning to the time I close them up at night.

They have a whole universe of sounds - from soft clucking to annoyed squawks - they let me know exactly what they think of their world.

I'ts a running commentary - and I swear sometimes it feels like they are muttering under their breath, usually about something I've failed to do/perform to their satisfaction.
Current topic is my abysmal failure to provide complete snow removal from their yard....

Mine are very talkative, and louder when they see me (as others have already said). Most of the time, they discuss things quietly (after they've gotten their treats). What amazes ME is that I'm beginning to tell which chicken is clucking, and something of what it's about... like "found a goodie" and "should I hop into that chair?" or "where did everybody go?"

My Cuckoo Marans has the funniest sort of beeping cluck. It's more hoarse than the other girls' clucks. Almost like little honks than clucks.

The EE rooster is still trying to perfect his crow, but he doesn't practice all the time (thank goodness). Just when he wants out of the coop, right after he gets outside of the coop, and that's about it.

well thanks for all the input, i guess i just have 4 hens that know what they want, just like being married to the DW!

I will try to differentiate between their clucking, squaking, cooing etc sounds like a lot of fun when you can start "understanding" what they want!

It is lots of fun when you get it. I never knew they could have such a range of communicative sounds. Mine run in circles with lots of excited "buck buck bucking" when they see me, and if I don't let them out fast enough (or can't let them out because I need to go do something -- gasp -- non-chicken related), 2 girls in particular escalate to RAWWWK RAWWWK RAWWWWWWWK!!! My favorite sound is this soft cluck-cluck-cluck-burrrrrrrrrrrr? that my favorite girl does when she's explaining to me that she's such a good chicken and deserves attention and/or treats (preferably the latter). And they all have different, identifiable voices.

My DH gets freaked out when one of them runs up to me and clucks and I can tell that she's asking to go inside to lay, or she's feeling nervous because the crows just put up the Hawk! signal, or she wants to be picked up. He's like "I can't even tell them apart, how do you know what they're saying?????"

My Silverlaced Wyandotte talks to herself and others about everything. She always has a comment to make. Her sisters, the 2 BOs and the Gold laced Wyandotte never say much unless the cat chases them. But the SL Wyandotte is always clucking.
