Very weird looking egg!

Just think about all those people who only buy their eggs in cartons at the store....they never get to see the strange and wonderful "gifts" we sometimes get!

Noelg, thanks for that cool link. That "flat sided" egg looks exactly like it. And that would make sense that it was part of a "double ovulation" because she had just laid a shell-less egg. Now I'm going to go look at all the other strange eggs on that list!

I got one that looked exactly like that today as well--probably from my April-hatch Comets. Ate it for supper, was great. The more experience you have with chickens the more of these kinds of eggs that you'll see--some seem almost as if they spiraled out of the hen. I suspect commercial eggs farms have a lot too but they are culled out and sent to bakeries. There is nothing wrong with either the egg or the bird that laid it.

Some of them have "rifling" like you'd find on a bullet--expect it happens as the shell hardens coming through the oviduct.

that is so wierd as my neighbor just brought one that looked just like that over to show me the other day. She didnt know which one of her pullets laid it. I just printed a pic of the egg to show her. So far none of my girls have laid an egg like that only 2 soft shelled eggs when they first started laying.

So, I cracked it into a bowl this morning. The shell, not surprisingly was pretty thin. The yolk looked fine, but the white was partly foamy...like spit. Just didn't want to eat it. I covered it, put it back into the fridge and will scramble it for the girls, or the dogs, later.
