Vet is stumped! Why are my hens having so much trouble??

You would really think that you can’t love a chicken, but you can! crying your eyes out if they die proves it!

Oh you definitely can! I love all animals & even I was surprised how quickly I became so attached.
I still cry about the first one I lost and that was over a year. And randomly cry about this latest concern. Luckily my calmer half is very understanding!

The head chicken is so loving towards me now, I follow her up to the nesting boxes so amazing to watch her lay

You paid good money at the vet, so follow their recommendations.

Just got off the phone. They’re looking into getting the implant now. Cost, etc. Also switching back to baytril in a few days after doxy is done bc baytril doesn’t have issues with calcium. Want to keep on top of it until we can be sure!

Edit: The vet just called & their cost for a 2-pack of the suprelorin is $225. If it was a guaranteed fix, or even a potentially permanent fix, I would do it for both girls in a heartbeat, but it’s neither of those things. It’s temporary, if it works at all. And I don’t know that we are at that point anyway. She is dust bathing as I write this. First to figure out their new dust bath!!! Today’s the first day I’ve seen either of them use it. Still runs around the yard, picks grass, catches bugs, has a big appetite. Yeah she still sits in the nest box sometimes with nothing happening, but they both have been doing that ever since it got hot this summer. I keep hoping for molt to start bc the resulting slow down in eggs would be so good for them. If she gets where she needs more dark hours in the day, she’ll have to live in a kennel in the bathroom for a while. But they definitely can’t both fit in there!!

I think going back to Baytril is a good idea, not because of the calcium, but because I think it's a better drug for reproductive tract infections. Regarding Baytril and calcium, listen to your vet, but keep in mind this is what textbooks say:

This is GREAT info!!! Thank you!! I will separate doses by 2 hours even with baytril!
I felt like she was improving faster on baytril! Overnight!! I attributed it to dusting them, but knowing what I know now, I bet it was more the fact that we started baytril about 8 hours before dusting them.

I picked up our baytril this morning. Two days of doxy left. If this was one of your girls, would you go ahead & start baytril, overlapping with doxy? Seems like I remember the vet telling me it was okay to do that. I hate to cut doxy short, but I’m also anxious to get her back on baytril. Also, they weigh 6lb 5oz & our dosage has always been .6cc for baytril. The vet I’ve seen the last two weeks is less experienced (younger, I should say) than my normal vet. He gets back in town this weekend. Still at the same clinic, just a different doc. The only other one comfortable with chickens. He put us on .75cc. I assume is to get a stronger effect, which is great! That should be plenty safe, right? Maybe we’ve been low in the past.

Also..... Not all oyster shell is created equal.
My birds will only eat pacific pearl brand. It actually LOOKS (and is) like real oyster shells.

Got the new oyster shell in today. They stared at it until I left. Then I looked out a few minutes later & I swear it looked like they were both going to town on it!!

Which Baytril did they give you? 100 mg/ml, 50 mg/ml, 2.5 mg/ml, or 2.27 mg/ml? It should say something like that on your paperwork, the bottle, or syringe.
