Virginia

Hi Virginians, I'm hoping someone here has an idea for me... As I posted a month or so back I have some Marans I need to rehome. I easily found homes for the 2 pullets and even one of the cockerels BUT I still have 4 more to rehome!!! I've had them on craigslist and nothing... Any ideas on a good way to connect with those looking for roosters of good stock? They are handsome fellas! I'm even ok with giving them for free but fear if I don't list a charge, people will have nefarious intentions. Thanks for help you may have :) Megan

Sorry you're having such a problem placing them. If you are asking more than $5 a piece for them, you may be asking too much. I've always just given mine away and hoped for the best for them. You could specify "for local delivery only" so you can check out their potential new homes for yourself. It might help to weed out ppl who are only looking for roos for slaughter. Do they have any poultry/small animal swaps in your area? Check with your local feed store, they might have some suggestions. Some of the feed stores have a cork board for customers to pin notices of animals for sale or trade. Good luck.

Hi everyone, i live in Toano (right outside Williamsburg) and got my first six chicken nuggets last month (they are four weeks old now). Growing and pooping like crazy!

Welcome!:frowGlad to have you join us. You will find lots of knowledgeable and friendly people here. You must be getting about ready to introduce your little ones to the great outdoors. Post pictures, ask questions, enjoy raising your little flock.

Hello,

New to BYC and chickens. May have jumped the gun with chicks since our are getting too big for the brooders and the big coops aren't built yet, but we'll manage I'm sure. Located in Whaleyville (Suffolk) Va in the SE near the Great Dismal Swamp.
:welcomeGlad to have you join us! They do grow fast. Hope you are able to get to work on your big coops soon. Always check craigslist and facebook marketplace for used and usable options for coops. Old playhouses, or small coops can come in handy for chicks, broody hens, introducing new members to your flock, separating sick hens...you get the idea:p. I got lucky and found a used small coop with an attached run on craigslist. It has come in very handy, but so glad I didn't pay full price for it! My newest additions to the flock are currently using it. Check out the coops on BYC for some interesting ideas.
So what kind of chicks did you get? How many and how old are they? Keep us posted on your progress and pictures, pictures, pictures!:pop

We currently have a brown leghorn and two buff Orpingtons hatched 1 April, a barred rock and RIR hatched 8 April and a Black Australorp hatched 15 April. They are in an almost too small coop outside enjoying life.

Brooder one is in the living room and holds most of our bantam flock. 12 silkies of various colors, one Belgian Bearded d’Uccle, a silver seabright and an unknown chick all hatched 22 May.

Brooder two is in the garage and holds a dark and a light Brahma (hatched 22 April). They are both ready to go outside and will start their look-but-don’t-touch introduction to the flock as soon as the full sized coop is complete.

Brooder three is also in the garage and hold the remnants of both flocks. Two black silkies hatched 25 April for the bantam flock and one Easter Egger, Blue Orpington, Blue Splash Maran, Golden laced Wyandotte, Silver laced Wyandotte and an Olive Egger all hatched 6 May.

Next month we should get two more Easter Eggers, a Blue Ameraucana, a Mottled Cochin and two Mille Fleur Bearded d’Uccle’s.

We are building kits from EZ Frames next week. A 10x20 with 4x10 coop space and 16x10 run space for the bantam flock. For the full sized flock we’ll build the same, but the coop will be 6x10 and we’ll add an extra 10x20 run onto the end for a 34x10 enclosed run. If we had it to do all over we definitely would have built all the coops before ordering the first chick, but we were excited and a little foolish >.<
