Day 10 on the harlequin buttons.... Yesterday we got two pekin ducklings.. They are so freakin cool.

Do you know if they are growing?

Nope... Not going to even try to candle them haha. This is my first ever attempt at this. Maybe my imagination but some feel heavier then others when I turn them now. I'm sure it's my imagination though.

the mottling makes it harder IMO. I've had and hatched coturnix before. I never bothered candling because of the mottling.

Thanks! I just got my first chicks a few days ago from Tractor Supply. They are buff Brahmas. I have 6, and I'm starting to think that there's a male in the group.

If so, I'll have to rehome him, since I can't keep roosters in this area. Hopefully he's the only one.

I'm really enjoying my chicks and reading the posts and information here.

I wasn't sure if I had a rooster in the group until they were 6-8 weeks old. Once the feathers started coming in, it was pretty obvious based on the breed. I fought it, and ignored the signs until he actually started making noise (and BOY was he loud!).

Good luck that you got all girls. If you were closer, I'd offer to take him in (if he is a he).

I may be wrong, since I'm brand new at this, but I have a feeling this one is a boy, because his wings are a lot smaller and less developed than the others, and his feet are a little bit bigger. Also, he acts different when I hold him. He chirps more and doesn't settle down as quickly as the others.

I guess if I only end up with one male, I'm pretty lucky, since I bought these straight run. I just hope I can find a good home for him, if it is indeed a he.

Glen, the girls have all got in high gear. They hiccuped on the 24, otherwise it's been an egg a day since the 18th. The real surprise is the game hen. She's laid 16 in a row and 20 of 22 days! She's flirting with broodiness, but hasn't gotten serious, yet.
