Virginia

Hey Virginia folks, I have three pullets (one week old) that I need to find a home for. (Leghorns and Red-sex link). Added a few to my current flock but had to buy 6 when I needed only three. I'm in Leesburg. Anyone interested?

other states have worked on things that I think would be better practices...

they need to leave the bucks alone so the strongest and most able bucks DO continue the breeding, but there's a vaccine they can give does that basically causes an immune response to the semen, so they don't get pregnant.
I agree that a look at other states would be helpful. Growing up in WI, I saw many changes to what type of tag could be purchased (they are much more strict there). My first year I could shoot a buck or a doe-- a privilege given to first time hunters just out of hunter's safety class. The next few years it was buck only unless you applied and were chosen for an either-or tag. Bonus doe tags were issued if the deer count allowed extras to be taken in your area, and even then you had to pay extra. That evolved into Earn a Buck where shooting a doe was required before you could shoot a buck. Some years there were even early T-Zone seasons where doe only could be taken with special permit. All of these tag options went county by county or zone by zone and were dependent on deer population and harvest. I am sure things are different now, I have been down here for almost 10 years now.

I do not agree with altering wild animals or contraceptive-- I want to know the meat that I am feeding my family is clean (or as clean as can be this day in age). I also fear things like that could backfire on us too easily. The most natural approach is best IMO. Ignorance, maybe, but hey that's how I think.

It is such a tricky thing… I understand the compassion some people have for animals. Deer are beautiful. We have some on our property that we would NEVER shoot. I truly enjoy watching them raid our orchard on summer evenings. That said, I feel it also needs to be understood by those against hunting that the alternative is equally if not more inhumane. Overpopulation will lead to starvation (think more winters like this last one…), vehicle accidents and higher cases of disease-- all of which can be slooooooow deaths where the meat does not or can not go to good use like Hunters for the Hungry.

I'll back down now… don't want to start a big hoopla about this subject...

Hey, it's warmish and not raining today!!

oh I agree with hunting. I am also for hunting with hounds within reason. when you finish your hunt, pick up your dogs. don't leave them for days. keep them off my land and away from my chickens and you can keep your hounds. if they are up here chasing and killing my chickens then you will never see your hound again. sunday hunting? I don't like it.  another reason for people to stay out of church. I think it should be after 1:00 pm because I don't want to hear gunshots on sunday morning. the solution is declaring the whitetail deer a nuisance species and have open season until the population gets down to more manageable levels. I only take one a year but am sure others would kill as many as they could.

Cuba,
I believe the sunday hunting rules are for private property only and nowhere near a church. Folks that aren't going to church don't go to church. I don't think hunting enters into it one way or another.

My wife is looking to get ~14 eggs for a hatching project in her classroom, anyone have fertile eggs in the NoVa area? We're not particular on the type of chicken as long as they aren't bantams since we will eventually integrate them into our flock and don't have any now. Looking to get them late April or early May. PM me with information...Thanks.

if you're looking for blrw, message DMRippy. she's in TN and said she's hatching a bunch...  her stock is from Foley mostly.

I'd be willing to go in on shipping a batch, but can't afford to ship 10-15 chicks plus shipping.  I only need 2-3 pullets.

She said she could probably have some to me before May 1st. If you or anyone else wants to go in on shipping, I can bring the chicks to the Gilmanor swap.

but why after all these years? what changed?

The law may be driven by insurance co's, for just the reasons you stated earlier, about the over-abundant deer population. Most insurance co's think deer hunting with hand grenades should be legal..; 0) Anyway, they have a very powerful lobby.
