The black snakes we have here in Missouri are also amazing for controlling rodents. They get huge. Use to have one about 6 foot long that sunned on our porch railing and the dogs and cats didn't bother him and the kids used to pet him/her when they were little. Snake seemed to like it. I've only seen bity garter snakes in my yard in the city.
