Where's the best place to get feed here in Vegas?
I've gotten feed all over the valley...mostly because I don't like the feed store nearest me, which is
Nellis Feed. They will take old hens and roos there though. I think they pay about $5 a bird. I haven't sold them any myself but a lady I know sold them her older layers. I don't particularly like the brand of feed they offer there and they seem kinda expensive but I don't have any horror stories regarding why I don't like them, I just don't. I get different things at different stores.
I get scratch at
Sunset Saddlery on Elliot off Boulder Hwy near Sunset because they have a real good mix for a good price. You have to tell them you want the good stuff, they know what you mean. A few things I don't like about them is that they charge extra for using a credit card, I don't like the quality of there chicken feed and they have chickens running all around the parking area. Doesn't seem very pro-bio-security. The scratch is excellent though!
I do like the feed at
Jones Feed on Rancho, though again, it's a bit pricey. They carry Purina products. They have great chick starter crumble, medicated only, and have chicks available through September.
I get chick feed at
IFA on West Martin Ave too, but Purina brand, not their brand. Mostly because I don't like mash for chicks. IFA is pretty comparable price wise with everyone else and maybe a bit cheaper. They do have sales on feed and BOSS occasionally that makes it worth the trip over. I do like their brand for layer feed, especially the 18% protein. I get oyster shell here, also. My chickens prefer the Purina Flock Raiser, but at about $20 a bag, I just can't do it.
A newcomer feed store,
V&V Tack & Feed, I haven't really tried. Their prices seem about the same as others, not sure what all they carry. They're located near Jones Feed. I have bought a couple chicks there.
If you're looking for some quick feed on the East side of town, the
Super Walmart on Nellis and LV Blvd carries Layena crumble in a 40# bag for a decent price. You should call before you go to make sure they have it in stock though. They run out rather quick.
I sometimes find BOSS for sale at
Petsmart.
Right now, I've been buying All Flock from
Cal's Ranch in Cedar City, UT. My brother goes up every weekend because his family lives in Cedar. I like All Flock because the protein is high and it's suitable for all my chickens regardless of age. I just supplement with oyster shell for the layers. I spend $14.99 a 50# bag of pellets. I have gotten flock block here but it is like cement. It last 3-4 times as long as what the flock block from IFA lasts, good or bad.
If you're looking for food grade DE here in town, PM me, I have the guys' name here somewhere.
Well, that's my experience with feed here, expensive and generally out of my way!
Went outside this morning to deep water and the sky is all orangey yucky. Where's the fire? Looks like an unhealthful air day.
I found a few things that could be it. The first is a wildfire in Northern NV that is the official reason.

However, I also heard about a wildfire in Southern Utah that seems a bit more plausible but was under control quickly. Between the two, yes, yucky, smokey, and unhealthy air for us!
