Viva Las Vegas!

Aaha! Of course! If you'd put BO, I'd immediately have thought Buff Orp. LOL! I was trying to get some kinda Black Breasted something something out of the BBSO, though BBS I may have figured out. Excuse me....I've had a long day with almost 30 five and six year olds that only have 7 days of school left. Believe me, it's not pretty!

Can you get me the name and location of the nursery we were talking about? The one where you get mulch for free? Thanks!

I get mulch from the UNCE orchard which is on Horse just East of Decatur. It is way out there in the NW almost to the Clark County Shooting Park. The mulch is free but if you have John load it with the tractor your kinda expected to donate a couple bucks to pay for fuel. Most of the people out there are volunteers and a lot of them are Master Gardners and all of them are very helpful. Remember though that they are only open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8-12.

HI Everyone, I finally got a few spare minutes to say hello and ask how all are doing. Glanced over some previous posts; I get my feed at V&V - they have a higher protein content than the brand jones' carries for the same price. At our Walmart up here, you can buy horse feed, scratch, cracked corn, chick starter, salt blocks, etc - but I think it's the only on in the valley that does. I get 40# scratch 8% protein for $9.88 there.
I have about 30 hens, a couple roos, lots of other beasties to care for as well. Sell eggs at $3.50 or $4 for new customers (dz). My breeds include amerucanas and EEs, black copper french marans, a couple new hampshire reds, a buff orp., an ancona and a frizzle, a cuckoo french maran, some barred plym rocks, a couple polish/silky/bantam mixes. Been keeping chickens 8 years now. Husband thinks I'm cracked (pun intended).
Up here in NW Las Vegas near 215/Hualapai, Centennial area. I'll try to check in more often!

Yay! So glad you found us! Welcome to the thread! Now we have the NW side of the valley too! Awesome! It's been awhile since I visited your coops, Is your Cuckoo Marans in with your Ams or your Marans? Whenever I get eggs from you again, I'd be interested in a few eggs from a Cuckoo with a BlackAm. Then I could have a cool barred OE. Oh, and is your NHR in with a roo presently? That would be a fun cross. I love designer chicks! I know you have BCMs and I think Black AMs, but do you have any other roos? Ha! Listen to me plot and plan! I just love having options.

That's awesome that you use V&V and could give us info on them. What brand do you buy there? I wish I had your Walmart near me. The one I mentioned is a bit away from me but they also sell scratch and cracked corn, but I've not seen any chick starter. It seems like maybe the locations on the outer edges sell more ag stuff than those closer in. I ought to see if they'd ship to the one 5 minutes away. Hmmmm!

Thanks for letting us know what you sell eggs for. I know a few others that sell eggs and this will give them an idea of what their eggs are worth. Also, do you have any capons growing out? You had a few you'd done when I first met you and I'm very interested in how that all worked out on overall growth, meat quality and crowing. See? You're a great resource for information! Thanks again!

I know way to many pics but I wanted to show my girls off! Right now I have 2 confirmed Roos, and they are both BCMs.
Love the pics Max! We can never have too many! While they are all beautiful...... a few of them really stand out. Love the lavs. Love the GCMs. It looks like you should have at least a boy (#4) and a girl (#3) but I'm stumped on your white one shown in pic #5, right? So strange. How many GCMs did you end up with and are these recent pics? I'm also really curious to know what type/breed pic #2 and #7 are. Plus, I love the look of your B&W EE in pic #1. She's a beauty!

We didn't manage to get to the nursery today. Gonna have to try another time.

Broody Mama Drama Update!!! So far it looks like Nixie has gotten off the broody train. She's still acting kinda weird but is not spending all day in the nests and is roosting tonight. While she appears to have recovered she must've passed the broody bug along. I have a frizzle cochin mix, Marley, that is hogging the most favorite nest. She stayed there all day even when the big meany girls came to lay their eggs. She scooted over a bit but held her ground. I'm gonna move her into isolation tomorrow night with some wooden eggs to see if she's serious. There may be some relief in sight for poor Casino who is literally spread a bit too thin!

You caught me!
#2 is a Bobwhite Quail and #7 is a Coturnix Quail.

I picked up a load of mulch yesterday and refilled my henhouse. It is amazing how a deep mulch bed under the roosts virtually eliminates the smell and ties in to my lazy side.

Ah, yes, my husband was VERY skeptical about leaving the poo and shavings under the roosts. He was going nuts cleaning it every weekend. I finally convinced him to leave it alone and it has very little odor or flies. Looks worse than smells. I have lots of gardener people who love that chicken manure, so it's a good way to get rid of it without putting it in the trash - we do this twice a year now, bag it into old feed sacks; we have more than we need.

I have only 1 roo on my all my girls, but he is not in love with all of them. I have an extra BCFM roo that I would like to cross over my barred hens (Amer, Cuckoo, Rocks) and get sex linked chicks, but I hate raising all those roos, even if they are capons, because their fate is the stock pot. As a veterinary tech, this is do-able, but not likeable. I would rather sell live birds and let others do the deed. So this year I didn't hatch anybody.

I have a black with white Amerucana roo, 2 BCFM roos (one is too black, really) and 1 silkie mix banty roo that has a harem of 2 old hens that are low on the totem pole and can't be mixed in with the others anymore, so they have their own little polygamy camp. Now and then the oldies lay, but mostly they are just sweetie pets.

IF I have confirmed buyers, I will do sex links next year, and caponize the roos for holiday dinner time. I may do a few BCFMs but I have more chickens than I need, so will wait until I have some expirations before I breed more. I am at my max on hens (and boys, too).
