Vultures

Definitely babies though, they wouldn't fly away when I got close. I backed off so they wouldn't tumble down the gorge.

Vultures seem to be migrating thru my area at the moment, lots of groups of 3-10 birds slowly circling and heading Northward..

They got back to NY about a month ago.

They're marvelous birds. Just think how rotten the world would be without cleanup crews! I love to watch them fly around here... they can soar forever, and the sun glowing through their wing feathers is gorgeous. Some of the most beautiful birds to watch fly, in my opinion.

We usually have 5-10 circling above our property on any given day, and see them all over the place eating roadkill. My two year old calls them “big hawks”, she’s still working on “vultures” they have a couple rehabilitated turkey vultures at the wildlife refuge near us, and seeing them up close and personal is pretty awesome! Giant birds!

I agree! They are magnificent soaring birds. (And this comes from a glider pilot!) I have watched a group circling in a thermal, and they never once flapped! Besides, their vision is excellent--to see the targets on the ground.

I had killed a rattler, who was next to my back door. After cutting off the head, I threw the carcass in the next field. In less than 10 minutes, a vulture appeared, and dined to his content!

I agree. Vultures are magnificent birds. It amazes me how such a homely bird can be so breathtakingly beautiful in the air.

They circle our pasture and timber all summer. If we have to dispatch a raccoon that is pillaging our garden or trying to get at the chickens, we always leave it in a clearing for a vulture pigfest.

My husband flies RC planes. All he has to do is launch and gain altitude and suddenly 4 or 5 vultures appear to fly with him. I told my husband that they must think that 'funny looking vulture' he's flying must know where the really good eats are.

What amazing me about these really huge birds is how they own the air. We will be driving down the road and see two or three in the middle of our lane feasting on roadkill and it seems as though we are going to hit them. We have had birds wait till we are almost upon them and launch straight up into the air and skim over the top of our car.

I've never seen a vulture as roadkill, but bless them, they make roadkill go away real fast.
