DH works for WalMart and of course at the holidays he is there more than he is here.

I try to look forward to Christmas Eve at 6pm because that signals the end of the chaos of extra hours and extra days at work. We live an hour away from his store so Christmas Eve starts at 7pm for us with a yummy dinner and the kids opening one present.

Well, this week WalMart decided to stay open until 8pm on Christmas Eve for those shoppers who just cant seem to fit in their gift buying in the other bazillion hours before Christmas. So, he will be stuck there until 8pm and not getting home until 9pm. Thats a bit late for dinner.

This is my theory about Christmas gift buying, if you wait until Christmas Eve to buy my gift... I dont want it.

I think that ALL stores should close at 3pm and allow workers to spend time with their families.

Boycott anyone?

I hated when i worked in health care for that reason..i missed too many holidays with my family.
Maybe have everyone take naps and have a late lunch.. so they can stay up later?..

I too am one who believes Christmas eve is for families, I look at businesses that stay open late and have distain for them, for not caring about their workers families. Just sayin.

I always boycot walmart. They are my last resort. Have always heard they treat their employees poorly and any business that does this is letting greed get the better of them! And yes I agree businesses should close early or be closed altogether on Christmas eve. Let's get back to family being #1 priority!

My mom works for Wal-Mart and while she does hate the hours sometimes, she is still thankful to have a job that pays the bills each month.

My dad worked for an EMS service for many years while I was growing up. From his years there, I learned that "Christmas" isn't always on December 25th. Sometimes Santa came to our house a couple of days early, sometimes he came in the morning while we were out feeding cows, sometimes he came in the afternoon after Mom got home and before Dad had to leave for work. It was more about when the family was able to get together than lamenting because we couldn't follow tradition.

I agree with above post..having a dh that was LEO/DOC..very seldom was he at home for the traditional times..we made do with other times..However..i do agree..it isn't necessary for stores to stay open at those times..and we all knew the 25th was coming..a year ago!!

I found out yesterday that my daughter also has to stay late at work on Christmas Eve,
She works at a store in the mall and won't get out until 8:30-9:00.
She is in college and needs the job so quitting isn't an option, especially the way things are with jobs nowadays.
Christmas Eve is always our special family time where there are no other relatives around, just us and the kids, we go to church, come back and have a nice dinner, open our family gifts and then watch Christmas movies.
She is disappointed and so are we, I know our young children will be upset that she isn't here.
Christmas is Eve has always been very special to us and its her favorite day of the year.
We will just have to figure something out, we will have to go to church and then eat dinner with the younger kids early and then the older kids when she gets home and go on with the rest of our festivities.
I don't understand why the stores have to stay open so late, if they put the word out that they are closing at noon or whatever people will shop accordingly, the longer you stay open the more people that will wait until the last minute.
I think with Christmas being on a Friday alot of people will be getting their paychecks on Thursday and doing alot of their shopping then.
Remember when stores never opened on a Sunday? You couldn't buy a gallon of milk on Sunday and we planned accordingly.

I vote the store closes, and I'll be home. We are having Christmas on Christmas Eve, as my LEO husband is working Christmas day. I understand the need, and we have dealt for years. Firefighters, EMTs, LEOs, nurses yes- understandable- Walmart? No. Close it up and let them go home.
