(WARNING: nasty photo of injury) What got her and is there any hope for recovery?

And in my honest opinion it DOES look better. It's much clearer and looks less irritated and softer. I would keep it up

how's her poops? She eating and drinking regularly?
I agree it looks a lot better compared to the first picture. Your doing a great job. Wishing the best for you.

Thank you for your concern and advice. Her poops look normal again. Not runny at all. She's eating her crumbles and drinking. Now that you mention it, when I cleaned and creamed her tonight, her wound did NOT smell at all. I will continue treatments every morning and evening and take photos every day. Thank you SO much!

Good idea. Try to take the pic from the same angle so it's easier for us to compare if that's possible. If her poops are normal and she's acting normal that's absolutly a good sign. If there was something underlying she would not be so cheery.

Also if you do see puss or a boil I wouldn't pop it cause it can cause the infection to spread

Slippery Elm – – make a poultice out of the powdered bark by adding enough cold water to make a paste. Apply to the abscess or boil. Slippery elm may be combined with other soothing herbs, such as Echinacea, goldenseal, and comfrey, in a salve preparation to soothe and bring healing to inflamed and infected skin.
St. John’s wort relieves nerve and muscle pain. Marshmallow root, too, relieves inflammation in sore muscles.

I would say you could find some essential oils of these but they are EXPENSIVE lol if you could find the herbs or even teas containing these herbs you could steep them and have some nice tea and apply the tea bag to her wound lol. Just make sure the tea dosnt have anyhing that could further irritate it. Chamomile and lavender would be soothing too

Thank- you for all the photos and updates. Seems like your hen is on the road to recovery. Your documentation of this process and the advice of other members is very interesting. I am always amazed by the resiliency of birds if given the appropriate care. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for asking about our little girl. It's Tuesday night and this is what she looks like. She has had the Tetracycline in her water for 24 hours, and from the looks of the water bottle, she did drink some of it today. This evening I made a fresh batch since the antibiotic is effective for only 24 hours. Her appetite is fine; her stools are normal again.

The thing that worries me the most is infection. What do you guys think about those small areas that look slightly blueish? Could they be signs of infection or something else? The hen gets washed and creamed with Neosporin twice a day. Tomorrow we'll get some vet wrap at the farm supply store and see if we can assemble some sort of a bandage to cover and protect the wound for part of the day. We will saturate it with the Manuka honey and coconut oil mixture and vet wrap it around her to keep it on. We could do that for 12 hours, then clean her and Neosporin her, leaving her wound uncovered, for the other 12 hours. The wound does not smell like anything but medicine. What do you guys think of her wound's appearance please?

I actually think it looks pretty good... Personally I have no experience with slathering wounds, but others who have might weigh in on your course of treatment :)

My thoughts on the black/blue area are that it is dying tissue, if it is not smelly it may just form a scab and help healing. Any odour and you should debride it.

I would probably simply rinse it with only saline twice a day and continue with the application of antibiotic ointment and the tetracycline. And make sure she is warm, eating and drinking as much as possible. High protein would be best.

Congrats on doing so well already! Whatever you are doing it must be working as she is still with you :thumbsup

I second the dying tissue, it could be where blood is pooling like wen you get a blood blister it's usualy almost black. Could also be some type of bruising. As it heals and parts harden is start trying to....this sounds gross.... Reassemble the tissue I guess. Like you can see where it tore and after cleaning between the cracks thoroughly Id see if I could move the tissue and then wrap the whole thing...or is it reletivly solid? I wish I could examine it in person!!!! It does look like it is healing very well thoo! Great job
