Sourland...I was wondering the same thing about the breed. They were sold as brown Sussex at the local farm supply store...I don't mind though, but it would be nice to know what they actually are.
You wouldn't happen to know how to tell the difference?

I've never heard of a brown Sussex. If it was a Sussex, it would have white legs, not yellow. I agree with @sourland about that one... it does look like a RIR or Production red

Is it possible for younger chicks to " feather out" sooner if they're kept colder?

Yes. Well, not "cold", but cooled off earlier. I've seen this discussed here often.
You may have some boys in there too.
