You know what, don't beat yourself up, the same thing not-infrequently happens to people who DID get references

As you say, things will work out for you, hang in there

My DH & I Built one of these from bought plans ; http://www.mobilechickens.com/photogallery.asp. It did not cost us 400 dollars and is perfect for 4 to 23 (which is what I have) chickens. I moved them 2 times a day and would reccomend it even if you don't have a large farm-like area to move it around like I do. The mobil features of this coup could also facilitate cleaning out underneath it if you didn't strictly use it as a mobil coup. Presently, during the winter, we moved it to near the garage. We have an extension cord running out ther to power the heated water dish. It is stationary, with a tarp underneath and tied halfway up the sides. There is straw on the ground, which doesn't get blown around because of the tarp, which I clean out 1 time a week. There is another tarp blocking wind on the windward side of the open area. It is not heated and doesn't need to be. There is easy access to eggs, water, food.
That's what we did. The instructions are good with lots of pictures and easy to follow. If you've got friends to help you, go for it.
Good luck.

That person took advantage of you.

There are better things on the horizon, including coops, so hold your head up high and tell your girls they'll have some lovely lodgings before too long. The first plan didn't work out, but the next will SO make up for it.

And I'm not just whistlin' Dixie.

to everybody, thank you so much.

that sucks. I hate being in that situation, and despite checking references, doing my homework, using good contracts and generally being a hardass I'v ebeen there TOO many times!

it happens to the best of us...

Gosh! I, too, was looking forward to this. How horrible! I know with hard work you'll be able to get something even better though. OR you could go tell him to give you your dang coop!!! I know how excited you were.

Some contractors just suck. Even "diamond-certified" ones. I can't tell you how much I went through to finally find Lupe, my priceless contractor who actually shows up on time and does the work right.

Good luck - and glad your friends are helping build a coop for your girls. I'm sure it'll be lovely.
