Sarah.... I totally agree with you. I like having my pen secure so the pop door can be left open all the time. It gives you the freedom to be away from home, knowing they are safe. And you don't have to worry about getting up to open their door, nor worry about an automatic door working right.
I believe the buried wire is to prevent animals like dogs, coyotes, and racoons from digging into the pen. So I have a couple of questions for you.
1) Is chicken wire stout enough to withstand their strength? I've always been told that chicken wire is only good for keeping chickens in, not for keeping anything out.
the chicken wire is/will be attached to either 2x4 welded or chain link, or both... The end product will have 2" C/W on top, making an aviary
2) Is the buried wire attached to the vertical portion of the fence? i don't understand? If there is a gap between the bottom of the fence and the layer of wire an animal will still be able to get in. The underground wire should be bent and brought up a few inches and attached securely every few inches. the C/W you see in the picture is the buried stuff, and it is held in place/on the ground by 10"w x 10"d of 3"-6" rocks and bricks, etc....
Please excuse me if I missed something, I don't want to offend. I just thought it would be better to speak up in case it was something that hadn't been considered. thanks Carolyn for the feedback... That's why I was posting :-D

Hi hi hi everyone!
I am looking for some advice: as many of you know (because I posted it here), my 3 hens finally started laying this week! YAY!!!
A minor issue, my Americauna has laid about 5 eggs and every single one of the has had a thin shell. So thin in fact, that two of them have been cracked and the rest were sort of "dented." They're a gorgeous pale blue, but I am so sad that they're not coming out quite right. The other two ladies have been laying firm shells, no problem there.
I have put oyster shell out for free-choice, but what else should I do? I have heard this is very common in new layers, but what can I do to help it?
Thanks for advice, as always!
