This one. The other three are at least an inch longer and an inch taller or more. But, s/he holds her own with them. Her size doesn't seem to make her back down one bit. In fact, when they all get to sparring, she's right in the midst of it. The other three are pretty much exactly the same size.

They were two weeks old yesterday.

CR - as soon as I can find my camera I'll take a picture of all four of them together so you can see the size difference. My husband's video camera can't seem to take a photo from inside the brooder without turning the whole picture bright red. I'm not taking all 4 out of the brooder at one time - that would be asking for trouble!

VF - leg size - I'm not seeing much difference of leg thickness on any of my chicks yet. I'll keep watching that one. Cocoa, Rocha and Blackie's legs are all pretty much exactly the same size. Latte's legs are a little bit smaller, but she's a much smaller chick.

Well I lost one chick that had not quite hatched, she pipped and then zipped half way around the shell and then just stopped. That was early yesterday, so I took her egg out just now and found that she had passed away

. I am not sure why though. She was not shrink wrapped and was still a bit moist but not so much that she would have drown eather.
Now the one that I thought would not make it seems to have a good chance. She pipped at the wrong end of the egg, but as soon as I saw it I grabed her out and only opened the shell and membrain enough so that she could have air and not drown. I figured that would give her a chance and if she still does not make then it was not ment to be.

We don't have any plans to move back, so we are pretty much on our own out here. My brother will retire in a couple of years and already bought a house in Austin. My sister-in-law will be moving back to Fort Worth in a year or two. So my sister and I will be the only ones who aren't in Texas. I would love to live closer to family (some help with the toddler sure would be nice!!) but we much prefer living in Seattle. The climate agrees with us, and my husband's pay is good. If we absolutely have to, we will move back to Texas, but we may die of heat stroke the first summer.

See the chick in the upper right of the pic, she has no red /brown in her feathers.

In this pic, the chick second from the left is the one I think looks like Jenns SF chick....

But again these are all just cute little mutts. Are you ready for newly hatched cuteness?????



So far there are 15 chicks hatched and dry, one still in the incubator drying off, and 6 more pips so far!

Ahhh, the cuteness! They are adorable!

My brother has bought property on Harstine Island he intends to retire to. My brother works in DC. Hates the summers. Can't get out of there fast enough at the end of the school year. My sister has a beach house in Florence, Or. She also works in DC. Aside from work, there's nothing to keep either of them in DC. I can't imagine my brother in L.A. coming home to live; too cold and damp.

OK, I may be a little repetitive here, and I have read up on some other forums.... but I am just going to assume that I am special and have a completely original concern, lol!

There are some breeds that I specifically, really, really want to look at in my backyard, one of each of:

Mottled Cochin Bantam

Exchequer Leghorn
German Spitzhauben
Golden Laced Polish
Red Shouldered Yokohama
(ETA): Partridge or Buff Silkie

My issues are 1.) Online Hatcheries never have all the breeds of chicks I want at the same time, 2.) WOW! Shipping.... and 3.) If I get them all at separate times, won't I spend a lot of time with quarantine/flock introductions/other chicken-spaz things? Oh, 4.) Would any of you wonderful chicken peeps know where/who would have this combo???

(ETA): Haha, when I first wanted chicks, there were only 4 kinds I wanted and they are pretty different than the ones I want now

Nope. You can stew them, re-sell them, or whatever you wish.
