Ive Celiacs disease, so Its G. Free all the way for my gals. Any Celiacs out there? If so what are u doing with your chickens?

WELCOME!!!! IM A CELIAC TOO, BUT NOT DOING A VERY GOOD JOB CONTROLLING IT. MY BORDS FREE RANGE BUT I SUPPLEMENT WITH LAYER MILLED LOCALLY. SHOULD RESEARCH IF THAT IS PROBLEMATIC FOR OUR KIND! !

Yay!  That look s like it's going to be awesome!!
Oh, YUM!  Maybe we will be ready for a workshop next year (first year with chickens, DH will handle processing them).  Hard to pass up on the sweet tea and JALAPENO corn bread!!! Om-nom-nom!
:goodpost: :lau   See!!! I knew it was a ligitimate excuse!!!
Sorry to hear about your hatch VF, dern it.  I hated the rain, until I missed the rain (Iowa) and now I am happy with the rain because it brings the green and we like green :0)
Oh, no, you are not alone.  I try to stay out of politics, but I can see that's not helping.  Most countries world wide has banned Monsanto completely.  The former CEO of Monsanto now heads the EPA, so try and figure that one out.  This whole administration is a joke.  I love my bumper sticker - "Don't blame me, I voted for Ron Paul"

THATS MY KIND OF BUMPER STICKER!!! IM SO ANGRY ABOUT HOW FOOD IS HANDLED HERE. RISK ASSEMENT INSTEAD OF BEING PRECAUTIONARY LIKE OTHER COUNTRIES JUST MAKES YS AND OUR KIDS GUINEA PIGS!!

VF. Few things here................

Some people don't do links due to viruses. I sometimes post links anyways.
If one doesn't want to read it all they just scroll on by.
Just like when people copy 6 pictures in a row and you already seen them once scroll on by or look at them again it's called a CHOICE one makes not DICTATED by a few others.

I didn't know you and we've you refer to were the board police?

I guess I'll look for that ticket in the mail.

In the mean time go outside and enjoy the blessings you have there instead of whining about something like that.

I was trying to avoid the scroll -- no worries. There are very easy ways to avoid having to scroll past your posts.

I also wish that folks who choose to quote photos would edit them out of their quotes -- but since I can't put them all on ignore....

Hi all, it's a lot slower today than it usually seems. Guess it's a great time to ask for y'all's opinions!

Most of you know we lost our beautiful Ameracauna a couple weeks ago to a gruesome prolapse.

At that point we had 3 hens, and now we have 2. I recently noticed that my Barred Rock has dried blood on the front of her neck and is missing feathers there. The other morning, I saw the RIR peck at the Barred Rock's neck in that area.

I am guessing that the RIR is trying to establish the new "pecking order," but my Barred Rock is suffering because of it. I put some Blue Kote on my Barred Rock and I have been separating her for afternoons (after she lays each day) for the past few days. I have been putting her in a dog crate with her own water, etc but the RIR practically screams when they are separated! How will I know that the pecking has stopped? How long would you advise me to keep them separate?

They have plenty of space in their coop/run for just 2 birds, we free range them often, they have appropriate feed and treats. I just don't know how to stop the RIR.

Complicaiting this is that FireWifeJess is graciously letting 2 of her ladies move to my house and I am trying to get my gals in order before introducing the new 2!

Thoughts? Anyone else had similar issues? I feel like I am always asking for advice. I hope someday I'll be able to give advice!

I'd just make sure and keep up the use of the blue kote and let them be together for now.
Of course if you able keep an eye on them a bit more.

I have over the years seen all kinds of advice on how to take care of the pecking order situation as well as the introduction of newbies and pretty much tried a lot of it and have come to the conclusion there is no sure thing.

Chickens are like people and can be down right mean to each other.

The pecking order situation is why I suggest people no matter how their dog reacts, what kind of dog, etc, always take the new chickens be it chicks or hens and stick them on top of the dogs head saying in a firm voice mine.

Do it a few times. Before doing it allow the dog to sniff the chicken to get that curiosity out of the way.

This tells the dog where they are at.

If you think about the pecking situation it also relates to different animals and if the animal has a master they want to please like ourselves.

My dog was a bird killer and still does when he can catch the wild ones but never has done nothing with my chickens all these years.

The whole pecking order going to start all over again when that happens anyways.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of!

I think it's best to get the blood situation under control before introducing the other gals. It's hard to keep an eye on them because I work away from home during the day. I check on them before and after work, as well as on my lunch break. But I am not able to stop the pecking if I don't see it :(

And, read actual human reviews, or ask around. I read the "breed characteristics" and there are a couple that if I could go back and start over, I would have gotten something different. I also went for lots of variety, because I wanted my coop to be colorful and with different personalities, yet I wanted good layers. I didn't ask or read real reviews until AFTER I bought most of my flock. The next batch that I get will be good layers, but I will be going off of what I have read from people on BYC about personality both with me and the other chicklets. I have a couple that just seem to be bullies. If it works itself out as they grow, then great. If it doesn't, then they will have to go. Bullies have no place in my home.
