Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

@LFM -

Ya.. I want a gate too.  For now, I'll rig something up using wire and PVC pipe so that we can close off the area between the two benches.  I am now working on the garden fence.  Again using saplings from the creek as posts and top rails.

Oh .. LFM - I'll tell you this for sure -- using the willow is way easier than using dimensional lumber.  With 2x4's (or whatever) it is easy for the eye to notice the mistakes.  With this type of construction - it is expected that it is not 'square'.  I'd rather build like this than with dimensional lumber any day.

One thing I will say is -- the proper way to do this would have been to cut the saplings this year and allow them to dry before assembly.  I've put lag bolts into green wood.  I would not be surprised it if all fell apart in two years.

It wouldn't surprise me if the posts took root. You did say willow, didn't you?

That was my thought.

At least, after the contemplation of all that downed applewood still lying about from the ice storm. If I had the energy to cut it up, it'd make a nice arbor-gate frame, or several of them. Or I could cut the horrible Giant Peach down and use that, frame a dog-proof fence and gates to the patio areas.

If I had the muscle to pull a saw long enough to cut things up.

Quote: Oh wouldn't that be interesting... a live fence! You know then you could espalier off of the willow, and create something amazing! Oooooooohhh!!! VF, you haffa haffa haffa do that!!!

P.S. Can I come utilize your willow? I need to make some rooting compound...

I am somewhat hoping that the posts will take. If that happens, then I'll just train the branches into a fence. That espalier sounds too difficult :) Fence is easier to say. We'll see what happens. I'm pretty sure it is black willow but could be elm, maybe even cotton wood. I'm not very good with my tree species.

TF - I have three types of willow -- weeping, crooked, and black - you are welcome to come and get as much as you'd like.

Hi everyone. My husband and I are new to Washingtom and have been here with our chickens for about 3 months. And we have a huge problem.

We live and Yelm and everything has been going fine, but today our homeowner said we can't keep our chickens in the neighborhood we love in. I was wondering if anyone would be willing or able to keep our chickens for us? We will provide everything for them.

I don't like the idea of giving up our babies since we have had most of them for year.

Just curious; is this your homeowner that doesn't want chickens? Or the local ordinances? (If it's the latter; I'd ignore it and keep your neighbors happy with eggs.)

He said it was the local ordinance. Which is odd cause we have 3 farms around our house. But we did find a lady in Roy who is more than happy to foster our babies for us for as long as we need her too.

That's great news!

I have a random qestion: but how does your husky do with chickens?

She actually does pretty good with them. We got her as a puppy and introduced them and had her around them a lot. We've also had to get on her a lot too for stalking and chasing them in the past but now she runs outside does her business and ignored them for the most part. And on nice days she just lays in the yard and watches what they're doing.

Tacoma farms - this is typically what she does.

before you go about fostering your chickens off, have you actually looked up the ordinances in Yelm? Or, did you mean your homeowner's assn has a rule about no chickens? (HOA's are a total PITA, IMHO!)

Our homeowner said he thinks it goes against local but definitely goes against the homeowner association. I didn't even know we had a homeowner association in our neighborhood.

Then they dump them on the side of the road out in the country instead of spending the $24 it costs to take a load to the dump.

We've had recliners dumped out on the side of the road, and last month it looked like trash from a landscaping company. They come in the middle of the night to dump.

The county is really good at cleaning the stuff up. The recliners took the longest and that was a week and a half. The county shouldn't have to though. The morons should do what they are supposed to do.
I bet the dumping problem would be much improved if people were given the option to have couches and other large/bulky items hauled by trash collectors once a month, and the amount put on their garbage bill. i.e. sofas up to 50 inches $10, sofas between 50-70 inches $12, sofas over 70 inches $15, or similar. There's lots of folks who don't live near a landfill, or don't have a legal way to haul stuff, so they dump within a few miles of their homes.

I know they have those twice a year collection events, but they restrict bringing junky animal-urine stained cat-clawed couches. They restrict "most" lumber also, an most other bulky stuff, unless it's good enough to be accepted for someplace like Goodwill. (Of course, if you have GOOD stuff, you can find a charity to pick it up, so that just strikes me as odd.) I'm thankful I have a truck and small untility trailer, but what about those apartment dwellers who have no way to haul stuff?

against local ordinance"?? in YELM? (My BS meter is going off.)

This person sounds like they don't like chickens and have some crazy idea that you are going to bring some nasty factory farm and stench into their pristine neighborhood. On your home purchase papers, there will be info regading HOA or not.

Better yet- ask the person who told you chickens are forbidden to show you where it says that- make that person do all the work.

My friend Jen used to live in the Clearwood community in Yelm where there was a HOA. She hated it and moved!

I agree, black ink on white paper goes further than a blah blah-er.
Good luck :)

We are renting the house but no one informed of this to begin with. But the husband is gonna take them to the lady to foster till our lease runs out and find a different place to live.

I thought it was crap too since literally not even a quarter mile from the house is a farm with cows, horses, sheep, goats, and guess what CHICKENS. Lol.

But we found out who complained and it was a neighbor who after a misunderstanding on something decided to be a (insert expletive) and complain some more and get our pets taken from us. And the chickens weren't even what the misunderstanding was about. Ugh. I really don't like people sometimes :(
