Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I have always been told that a hen won't change egg color. The shade of the color may vary but not from say a blue to a dark brown!

Have I been mis-informed??? I have never had it happen with any of my girls.
I have never heard of a blue egg layer laying a brown egg, especially such a dark egg.
They just do not have the physical capibilities to do so.
Tinted layers (Like the EEs) can lay a pinkish egg one day and a greenish tinited egg the next day.
Marans lay such a dark egg though, and their egg colors usually fades as lay season goes on, and can be extremely dark in spring, but by fall they lay a light brown egg even speckled as they "run outta paint" by the end of lay season....

Sure Sudsy doesn't have a Maran in the bunch ??????????

I don't think you've been mis-informed. It didn't go from blue to brown, it went from light blue to dark blue. If I had to guess, I'd say it either took a really long time to get through the tube

Or maybe went through twice? And got extra coating. But that's just a guess! Only the egg knows for sure

I LOVE the greenish blue one kinda in the fore ground...awesome !
Yes that one looks like it got extra paint !

I was thinking I should take a walk while the sun was shining, and suddenly it began to hail.....hard....

Yeah- the hailstorm yesterday was a trip, it was. I was worn down by five (especially because I'd had about five hours of sleep the night before thanks to Mr. Squeaky Brakes) and was sitting in the south-facing study with the late sun shining on my back when I realized it was 6:30 and I needed to get the sheep in his pen and the Bantam back in the house for the night; ran out in my shirt, no jacket to find huge black thunderheads pushing in from the north and a cold, cold wind risiing. It was motivation for moving quickly, let me tell you; got the animals straighened round and the shopvac covered against the rain and was in the house with chunks of ice on my shoulders as things started to get rough.

April, come she will.

Here is the response from sending a message to the city of yelm site about raising back yard chickens. It's also very upsetting that a few complaints can change the laws so much. I suggest complaining about not being able to raise chickens.
The e-mail sent back to me was from animal control.
"The City has received complaints about citizens raising chickens for food. Our response has been that as an urban area only pet animals are allowed. See 6.08.010 of the YMC and 6.08.30 definitions for pet animal defined. Thanks

Gary"
My husband called the officer that left notice on our door that it's not permitted to have chicken's in yelm city limits. He was able to quote the code that classifies chickens as livestock, but "couldn't remember" the code that says livestock isn't allowed in Yelm City Limits. And I have scowered their site with the words chicken, livestock etc anything I could think of. And can't find anything saying live stock isn't allowed. My husband will be emailing this officer again but so far nothing with the code. It's really frustrating though because we asked the home owner before buying this house and she said that we could have chickens, and our neighbor, who I'm pretty sure called saying we have chickens when the only chicken anything we've done is told him in MAY of last year that we wanted chickens. But when entering Yelm from either end and exiting Yelm from the other, there are animals everywhere :( it's really sad that I have a house of 6, my husband and I, and an 8 yr old, a 5 yr old with special needs, a 2 yr old and a 9 week old. We eat ALOT of eggs and eat ALOT of chicken. Being able to have chickens would help out a great deal with money spent on food!

Well, I better go get myself some leaded coffee before the head ache sets in..............

Have a Q for VF:
Did you grow all the jalapenos you canned, or did you buy a case from a farm ?
I want to do some this year in half pints though.........and need a good recipe.

My Mom may have one, she makes awesome Jalapeno jelly...looks like mint jelly but not !
She uses this for meats, like poke chops
