Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

You say that now, but that's how it always starts. LOL
I've got my exhibitor list, when I get home I'll PM you the info for the RED guy. I can't keep birds in a big barn either for those reasons, I prefer the fresh air anyway for them and myself.
Hopefully someone else knows about the 4H up there, I have no idea.
Well, I have these constraints, known as "property lines"... If I had acreage, I'd be the crazy chicken lady in about 5 min flat. Heh.

Thank you. I just know it wasn't a name/source I'd see via the page here on BYC, and tho I know there are other forums, I barely have time for this one.

4H - sometimes this happens. I say "anyone know?" and that's the kick I need to find out my "own-self". Sent an email to the Jeffco contact, and found their FB page. It's a start. I won't have birds available for a while yet, as that was the bargain I made with Mr. Alston - mature pairs for eggs as they are produced for a while. :) It's all good. In the meantime, I have a really bright 5yr old boy who needs to learn to take care of something with expectations he can't ignore... Love 4H.

Pen space is always limiting factor here.

A lot of poultry folks aren't on-line, and a lot of the exhibition folks that are avoid BYC. That's why I think it's so important to get to the shows and network there in person!

This 15 degree at night weather we've been having is NO FUN!

Hello fellow Washingtonians,
I am in need of some advice about an unwanted chicken. Kind of a long story but here goes:

At the end of August we adopted two little chickens who showed up in a friend's backyard. They had been living in our friend's yard and sleeping in the trees for 2 weeks before we captured them and brought them to our home. They were young (~3-4 weeks old) and seemed sweet and since we have a small backyard flock of our own, we thought they'd make a good addition. About 2 months later we realized that one of them was a cockerel and was always very aggressive towards one of our old hens (there was blood shed!). We decided to donate him to the Monroe Feed store shortly after. The other chicken is not as aggressive but also tends to attack the old hen when she gets picked on by our other hens. Our poor old hen (Lucy) is a sweetheart and can't really defend herself so i'm sure that's why the little one likes to take it out on her when she gets pecked at. In the daytime, the little chicken is separated from the rest. At night they all sleep together. I've noticed that this situation is starting to become very stressful for Lucy. Since Lucy is one of our original chickens and is now a beloved pet (she no longer lays eggs), we are wanting to give away the little chicken. Does anyone know of a place that takes unwanted chickens? Or anyone have any suggestions for how we can make them all get along? I would actually prefer to give her away, because we have tried for a week now to integrate her but there seems to be no progress. I want her to go to a good home but I'm not sure anyone else would want her since she is aggressive towards old hens and (as of yet) doesn't lay eggs. I don't think we can bring ourselves to cull her either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I will attach a photo... She is on the right, the rooster on the left.

Well, it can take longer than a week to integrate chickens, but it is hard to watch an older hen get picked on by a younger one.

She looks to be some sort of game fowl, which means she's gonna be 'pecky' to begin with.

You can go to the Buy/Sell/Trade part of this site and advertise her as a free to good home hen. Someone is likely to snap her up from you -- I'm way over in Omak so no way I can get her quickly. She's a beauty.

I can take her if you are heading towards Puyallup anytime soon. Pm me if you want to set something up.
