Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

So the old coop was on it's side and is to wet to put the mama and chicks in. I'm putting together a dog house on my tiny porch. I'll seal the front with a board and they will be locked in with a heat light. I don't want the really cold temps to hurt them.

Hey Hintori- how old are your chicks?

Just got 15 Maran hatching eggs from DM Rippy in TN - they are now happily in my incubator. She did an awesome packing job! Can't wait to see how many hatch!!!
Luck! We have 2 dozen due February 21. Never done this before... How slowly the days go. We put the incubator in a spare room which gets used rarely, so it's not a constant reminder that we need to WAIT.

There's was a skiff of snow on the ground this morning. I wish we'd get one good storm before Spring, just doesn't seem like real winter without it. Sunday was gorgeous though. Took the GSD to his herding lesson and I was warm enough in just a hoodie. He did much better this time. I threw the ball for him and did some obedience for 45 minutes prior to the lesson (he was foaming at the end), and it took the edge off enough to actually learn something. Then got together with friends to watch the Super Bowl. How about those 'Hawks?

They hatched Saturday and Sunday. If they were older, I'd be less concerned. I have to go find a 40w bulb, but they are settled in and happy.

Hey Hintori,

I have recently gotten pretty excited about a way to keep really little baby chicks warm and secure.

I found these storage boxes at Home Depot and have been using them with a Brinsea brooder/warmer thingy to keep very small chicks happy- check out my picture:

The duct tape at the top is NOT necessary, I just put that there in case my cats started rattling the box and found a way to get it open.

I use these boxes for nest boxes too- just open the front and there's a nice ramp!

You posted the pic of that container somewhere, (FB maybe?) I really like it. If there wasn't a very protective broody mama, I'd have a set up like that. I love how you can see in the side. I have an ecoglow 20 brooder as well.

I thought about putting that in the dog house raised as high as it goes and leaving the little LED bulb for light. I'm not sure if mama would go under it.

Something got in the pen and house and got a chick sometime last night, so I'm down to five of them. Nothing but a bear can get in the house they are in now. They aren't show quality silkies, but aren't hatchery birds. I'm not planning on selling any of them.

My husband did give the go ahead if I want to look for a partridge silkie rooster so I could hatch out a few pure colored partridge chicks later on.
