Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hey Matt, great pictures! Love that pathway!

Just a FYI about the racoons. They won't dig but they can scale those fence boards in a flash. DH and I have actually watched them do it. They hold onto the sides of a board, like you would might hold the sides of a ladder, and up they go. It's awesome and scary at the same time. That's one of the reasons we put a lid on the "secure" pen. It's solid material now, but originally it was the welded wire.

Raccoons can climb the 60 foot tall trees next to our yard in about 5 seconds flat. They are normally tree dwellers and very good at climbing pretty much anything. Good idea to have a cover that they can not chew through or open.

lol Ok, after re-reading my post, I did make it sound like I didn't know racoons could climb trees, or fences... I ment to say that there have been no signs of racoons digging or trying to get into the coop. Dumb typos : P The fence is only there to keep the girls in (we have 2 houdini's), and unwanted stuff out during the daytime. I have thought about covering it, but it wouldn't look good. We are very pleased with our setup. It will never be done, neither will the house. Always another project to do lol. This weekend is the rooster weathervane topper!!! Then a new microwave hood vent for the wife : o

WHAT?  They hatched the same day, really?

Or did I miss something?

Oh! Lol no! But I can see now how it appears. Wouldn't that be amazing? My test batch in the new incubator is hatching on the same day I received my eggs in the mail. Lots happening here! Plus we are getting ready for the school carnival tomorrow and fixing a car.

I lost my first bird today. It might have been infectious bronchitis, or some other respiratory problem, I'm not sure. I had her back in the bathroom where I raised the baby chicks for warmth, with electrolytes, food and water. I thought she was going to recover because she would eat and drink quite a bit, but after leaving her for a couple of hours today, I came back and found her dead. Sad.

Sorry for your loss. I have a sick bird too. :( She is one of the chicks I hatched in July. She has never been super strong and is still quite tiny. Last week I thought we'd lose her, so I brought her in the house one cold night and after that she was fine! However, yesterday she was lethargic again. She is eating well and shows no signs of illness other than lack of energy. I suppose I'll treat her for coccidia now and hope for the best. Is it so discouraging when we work so hard and end up losing them anyone. Any other advice?

it is discouraging. Sometimes placing them in a smaller group so there is company but no competition for feed. extra treats, check for lice who often take advantage of the weak. worm . Sometimes one will get a slower start catching up later or have a predisposition or weakness unknown. I try to save them too.

I'm keeping all of them! I'm a confessed chicken hoarder! I love having a hatching bator, it really helps keep the good one clean. Let me know when and where you want to meet up and we will be there!

GOOD NEWS!

After frantically messaging all the people on ebay who sell bantam cochins (with good shipping reviews) One lady said she has some and sent them out this morning! I AM EXCITED! I brought the kids their chicken journals today and they wanted to start it today! I was worried they might not like it but I realize now that is silly! :D

I was planning on incubating some eggs with my Girl Scout troop. Doing egg journals too. Let me know how it goes would love some advice about what worked best. I have to get an incubator still trying to find the best one. I don't know how often my DH will let me incubate eggs so nothing to expensive.
